Let's not overlook the costs insurance companies push on your providers. Your docs have to employ staff just to keep pestering the insurance companies to pay up - and what gets paid for each procedure to each provider appears to be at whim.
Some time around '00, a BC/BS of MA executive got a 6-figure bonus for deciding to treat each and every claim to 3 automatic denials, instead of the then-prevailing two.
Everyone's freaking out about letting the feds run the insurance system when medicaid/medicare spends 3% on admin - true they pay less than the commercial insurers, but they do pay, on time, with a minimum of muss and fuss. The commercial insurers? 30% on admin.
The mutuals to better - more like a credit union - but those that answer to Wall Street are extortionists.
Oh - wife and I are currently uninsured. The kid is on a state plan thru his dad. I was lucky that my appendix decided to freak out just before (got out of hospital on last covered day) our insurance lapsed ($1550/mo for COBRA - wasn't happening). Terrified.
Ex-wife and I had an experience in France that had her in 2 emergency rooms, with ambulance between (odd story, tl;dr) and our bill - as non-citizens - was 40 Francs. That was something like 8 bucks. I spent more on the taxi to get to the pharmacy.

Guess my health plan is to not get sick or hurt.SO I guess I gotta pay a penalty now since I don't have caverage.
Hey gov't lets help out the folks that work that make the backbone of society instaed of the leaches that keep leaching it out.
They passed a law here that if you can't pass a drug test you don't get food stamps.Makes sense people that smoke weed shouldn't be able to feed there kids.
They tried to make a law where you could only buy real food with foodstamps(no sodas ,chips, candy etc.)But decided it violates there basic rights.
So aparently its not a right to consume a plant that God gave me permission to use anyway I see fit.
But its these slugs right to spens all our tax money on sodas and junk food get fatter and more unhealthy and use up more of the healthcare that I'm paying for but don't receive any treatment when I get sick.

The insurance companies, for their part, spend an enormous amount of time, energy, and money to be sure they are in constant compliance with federal regulations. HIPAA regs are a major hurdle, just for one.
Don't forget the doctors who are part of the insurance company heirarchies rake in major bucks for not even seeing those who remain well. Capitated services. Or $ per head per month. And denying services leaves dollars in the capitation pool, which gets split between the participating PCPs on a regular basis.
The 3 man, appointed by somebody, answerable to noone, ( Congress, the Courts, God, noone ), death panel hasn't kicked in yet. Just see what services Big Bro decides your skeevy old butt is worth then. You will have to take that little vacation to Sri Lanka to get any procedures you are not allowed to get here...
Something to look forward to...
Doctors aren't the necessarily the good guys. Marcus Wellby was a vacuous TV show, and Robert Young is dead.
Insurance companies aren't necessarily the bad guys. Certainly not the good guys.
The government doesn't give a flying fuck about anything but controlling you / us /me. That's why they call it a "govern"ment... They rear up on their hind legs and give you pablum about how they have to "pass the bill so we can see what's in it"...
Meanwhile working out how to have more folks pay into the system, and die before using the benefits, so the slush fund to overthrow the Nicaraguas and lube folks who don't want to do what we want them to do remains accessible to them...
People live too long, want to live longer, and refuse to take care of themselves. Working isn't fun, and the late night TV infomercial disability lawyer says my "condition" is a gold mine. And &diety forfend we should take dear old brain dead lovey off life support...
Each point fingers at the others, and meanwhile the old reach-around is goin on big time. Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge.
Just saying... It ain't easy...

And don't forget, the illustrious Internal Revenue Service will be managing this new health care plan since the Supreme Court ruled it is a tax.

And the Social Security Administration really needed that 1.6 billion rounds of hollow point ammunition for target practice...

The immigration bill the executive branch is trying to push through exempts what-will-be-former illegals from the health-care act and the penalty for not carrying health insurance. The unions are embracing it too. Bottom line, lower paid Americans will lose their jobs and be replaced by former illegals, for which there is no health care mandate (by exemption) and no penalty for not having insurance.
America is FUBAR.

yep - downright criminal we dont make them buy food with money we EARNED, WORKED FOR, and GAVE them to buy food. They tried to make a law where you could only buy real food with foodstamps(no sodas ,chips, candy etc.)But decided it violates there basic rights.
soda & candy aint food. rice and vegi's and meat == food.
and thats all stuff I - as a well paid, working adult - cannot afford to buy for myself.
When did those on welfare become the 1%?
How the hell do I get on this program so I can afford soda?
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

Guess why I moved to Italy? Nat health here has BIG problems but at least it's always there for you. At 53 I was just loosing too much sleep, and had stopped skiing, biking... was always scared to get hurt at work... Now I just worry about national health sloppiness...
A good place to follow Obamacare is here - very informed, critical, serious/skeptical crowd:
http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/ -> search Obamacare or Affordable Care Act and read though back posts.
FYI here's some recent articles. Accurate? Beats me but it's worth sorting though the info and being ready. I got friends in MA and they've had Romneycare for a long while now, the world didn't end. But as for the ACA I see A LOT of people just paying ~$100/m penalty to NOT have health ins. That'll be kind of wack, talk about dysfunctional. Myself, I'm a single payer advocate, and raise the minimum wage to $17/hr and you can get rid of Food Stamps, school lunch programs, housing subsides... the list is long. All those government subsides don't subsides the poor, they actually subsides the mostly corporate world that needs workers that don't collapse from lack of nutrition or exposure but don't want to pay a living wage for that.

Great! Roll out of bed and hand a tenner to the insurance co. every day, no days off. No biggie, costs me @ $60 a day just to wake up - taxes + insurance (but not health). Here's your money you %$#@! pirates, can I have my coffee now?mark enger wrote:On a good note wifes gonna be able to keep insurance, price we'll only double, so 68$ a wk, on a bad note my job works with oil drilling industry, when gas is gonna break record prices we get the work, we got one semi load in today, and they will be filling up our shop all summer, so its pretty much set gas will sky rocket in the fall, i've seen this first hand many times the writings on the wall, thanks for all the replys, mark
So I should hold onto my Exxon stock a while longer? I take it, they start drilling when futures prices hike upwards. In the meantime, I've cut my driving to 2000-2500 miles per year. It bugs me that it costs $6 in gas to cut the lawn though. That never stops.
