Sears Silvertone 1482

Post by M Fowler »

Got this amp in for checkup has been sitting for long period.

It sounds fantastic but owner wants it back

Amp functions very well no issues so we opted for 3-prong power cord up grade.

I have a bunch of odd ball audio chassis with transformers I might have to build a home brew 1482 :)

Put it in the HiWatt section. We all know HiWatts were based on the original Silvertone designs, right?

Love them Silvertones! :D

Looks just like mine, even the diamond baffle cut. I leave that amp with everything wide open and that works for me. One of my favorite amps of all time! Amazing how so many of these STs stayed in fantastic shape, many with all original tubes.

And we do need a Silvertone section.

I gotta say I really like my 1484. (1964...got from original owner)
after a recap, some resistor replacements, and some new knobs
it really has a nice cranked rockin vibe to it.

I had a 1484 but sold it in 2003, should have kept it.

Wouldn't mind the 1485 100w version ala: Jack White.

Agreed Mark
some do come up on auction sites reasonably priced or need work, but
most seem to be trying to cash the NOS or vintage card.
Any ideas on older sleeper amps we might get in front of a trend and make some cash?

Make great harp amps too! I assume you're playing guitar through it?

How is it some of these old designs are good for both guitar and harp unmodified and yet modern stuff is very much one or the other???

The only amp I'm really interested in building is Magnatone Tonemaster 214 but go with 6L6, vibrato, 3 knob reverb, gain, MV, TMB, and cut. Foot switch for boost, vib, & reverb. Effects loop, line out, dual HT to run 6v6 or 6L6, dual cathode bias switched for 6v6/6L6 and switch for tube recto or SS recto.

Wow...sounds very cool Mark, and marketable.
Would this have the varistors?

Pulled from your scrap pile, or are they available again?

Got the cooper varistors from ebay. Several of us TAG guys bought some.

I read that Magnatone reborn is using silicone varistors.

Will this be your first build with the copper varistors? Curious how they sound...Thanks Mark!
