Radial caps in use

A member asked how I was employing radial electrolytics in my builds. I just finished my version of Trace Elliott's (Velocette) version of the (I hesitate to mention the Gibson GA-15, because the Velocette looks nothing like the original Gibson).

Nice! I tend to avoid them, but did buy a bunch of cathode bypass values for cheap. Before I got a shitload of Rubycons, I was using a radial for the cathode bias in my AC30/Rocket. Now that was a bitch to do!

Looks great! Thanks for the pics. Mouser only sells the radials(cheap!) so I've been contemplating this scenario myself.

Also have solved a problem where the 22uF cap, the fatty, crashed into my input jack, so I drilled a hole in the board and dropped the cap into the hole. See photo.

i like using radial caps, a little blob of silicone between the side of the cap and the chassis/board holds them nice. they work nice installed perpendicular to a terminal strip. okay, I also like them because they're cheaper.

Or is your comment about cost (not cheap enough)? Mouser has just about anything you can imagine and then some. The problem is a crappy search engine. I like the paper catalog -- faster and easier to use.

Oh, yeah, the difference in unit cost on the radials at is difficult to understand. This seems to be the case everywhere, though you can find decent axial caps for considerably less money. Be careful about buying counterfeit caps on eBait -- there have been cautionary threads in guitar amp forum, so no need to rehash this. I am guessing the audilphool community wouldn't stoop to using eBay as a parts source. I mention this because not too long ago I bought what appear to be 10 high quality 22u Panasonic axial caps for a very reasonable price and then realized I have no way of knowing if they are the real deal or not. I will assume they are until proven otherwise

The way you've bent the leads on your radials will lead to reduced lifetime and in the worst case cause internal short circuit.
Most manufacturers recommend to mount them vertically, drill 1mm holes in the board so leads can be bent on the underside. That way you won't be bending them at the point of exit from the rubber seal in the case. This causes the internal part of the lead to press on the electrolyte soaked paper foil and can lead to arcing between layers of Alu foil. Same applies to snap-in caps, don't bend the leads.
Whenever I receive a shipment of radials not in original factory packaging, with leads already bent every each way I just return them. Same if there are dents in the casing.
Cheap caps? You get what you pay for, like everything else.

Not cheap enough. $4 for 22/450 is crazy! haha.No, that's actually not a bad price, but their cheapest 40/450 axial is $14. Don't get me wrong I love Mouser. I placed an order Monday at 7p and it was here Tues at 2p! It took me nearly that long to find what I was looking for! I totally forgot Steve has some great prices on caps at Apex, too. Heck he has a lot of great stuff.
