Well, I'm 60 and I recall .22/gal gas, like Nick said it was in a gas war. Hey, remember Green Stamps?

Tom: conditioning is sort of what I was getting at for the excitement at the price dropping a dime. I guess it's what the marketers expect and I suppose it does work on some folks. Remember the first time it went up over $4 a few years ago? The President rolled the taxes back to relieve us of such a terrible burden. I don't see that happening now - Hmm, guess he doesn't have to worry about getting elected again.

I also remember back when there was a gas crunch (1974 I think) and the general public simply cut down their consumption; to the point that it brought the producers to their knees and very quickly there was a large surplus rather than a "shortage". Too bad we can't seem to take up that flag anymore. Maybe such a movement would not be feasible today, I don't know, but no one seems to even consider such trying a concerted effort.

And yes, we certainly are spoiled, gas price wise, compared to the international average price. Well, maybe it's because I'm from Texas but I can kind of see it as we're the major gasoline producer . . . . ahem, were the major producers.

Essentially - you're right, and we're right....
I'm quite sure you know the facts, but....

Inflation occurs because a rise in general prices of goods, which we in turn compensates with a demand for higher salaries, which is again compensated by manufacturers and traders increasing the prices to compensate for the higher costs - and the snowball is rolling.

Market economy requires an increase in production and consumption in order to work, - otherwise stocks goes down, - owners values are decreased - i.e. recession. And then 'monetary authorities' try to stimulate production and consumption........

Based on the last years events, an increasing number of influential people see that a system change is necesseary,, but noone so far has a recipee for how....
I think we all know that it is only in fairy tales that bean stalks grows into the skies....... and if they do, they are doomed to collapse sooner or later....

EDIT: and even if all or most europeans are concidered 'co***es' - that is absolutely not what I am suggesting...

I am 48 and getting tired of hearing all the bitching about the good old days when gas cost even less than a quarter. It was awesome at a quarter. Shuush. I want to be old.

Inflation makes getting a cheap gallon of gas exciting. Bastards. They turned simple pleasures into taxable events. I remember when gas was sub-$2 a gallon just a few years ago. Bastards.

Gas is special. If you don't make your own you are going to suffer the weight of some fatassed net producer sitting on your face.

They say that inflation can be most easily read from the price of gold vs the avarage cost of a well made suit.

If this is true, buy gold.

I remember when $1 worth of gas would net me a pretty significant evening of smoking joints and drinking and driving with my friends. That was long before everyone got MADD.

I also remember being strapped for cash and putting something like $0.37 in the tank to get to school and back.

Those days are long gone.

That's a quarter.
Is that the same as Ethyl gas?

I used to pump Ethyl. :D

Back in the day Miles, :D I had a '69 Bug, I could fill that thing for less than $5.

My pickup that I was commuting to work with, a couple years ago, was
costing me over $600 a month in gas.

Back in the day, I used to have to walk uphill both ways, in blizzard conditions, just to buy pot....

Don't let that smoke out!

My mad money in college came from $10 "lids" (about an oz.)... well, when I didn't smoke the profits.
