Dumblish preamp with 4xEL84 cathode bias?

Post by ODwan »

Hello!
Has anybody tried patching an ODS style preamp in front of a 4x EL84 poweramp with cathode bias? I wonder how this would sound like....

I thought about it, but methinks it may sound TOO mid rangey.

I have done a 4 6V6 and it was VERY cool.

Hi, Funk!
Fixed or cathode bias?

I have a 4x6v6, fixed bias here, it's very nice.
Also have 2xel84 fixed bias, it doesn't have the authority of the bigger amps, but I was thinking the same thing...4xel84 / cathode bias, might do the trick.

I did fixed biased with mine, I used 4 JJ 6V6's and actually had about 500v on the plates, it made 52 CLEAN watts of power and sounded wonderful!

Hi,
yesterday I patched my HRM build's preamp in front of my Liverpool's poweramp. The result was, well, very crisp! Lots of high mids. I have to say, that I heard it through the Greenback loaded 2x12 cab I normally use with the 'pool. The clean sound was gorgeous, sparkling, rich, very transparent. Not Dumble, but a very good one!
The overdrive was a bit too etchy almost grating. Maybe one could tweak to taste, but I didn't want to change my ODS. There WAS potential there, though!
This idea came to me after playing through a Mesa/Boogie Lonestar Special on a session, which had a real good clean sound. The overdrive was not raelly to my liking. So I thought a ODS preamp might be better, 'cause both the Lone Star and the ODS have Fender heritage.
Greetings,
