330K grid leaks for more aggresive vox tone

Post by chopstuck »

I'm trying to cop a little more gain out of a vox type normal channel.
I'm liking the London Pro sound and am wondering if I can sort of get there with 330k gridleaks on the el84s like my EF86 lite.

My goal was to make a single triode pre, a pentode pre and a switch for cascading a second triode stage onto the first. Simple volume and tone w/ a 3 way brite switch.

Just a smaller version of a 30w MazGT/ ef-86 thing I built a ways back but with more clean headroom with a single triode and more compression on tap when I switch in the second.

Has this already been done? Did it work out well ?

Otherwise I'm back to my driven pentode preamp quest.
Heavens, an unused PI input !

Why not give it a shot? The Marshall 18W 1974 circuit uses 470k grid leaks to drive the crap out of the power amp. EL84s are pretty easily driven. You could sub in a 500k dual audio and dial back to taste for a bit more crispy creme.
