Fender Pro 6g5 and 6g5a

Post by M Fowler »

I ordered a replacement 6g5 board set only to discover I need 6g5a board set, big difference in these two circuits.

Well I discovered the 1961 Pro amp I'm restoring has 6g5 on the label but shows 5881 power tubes which would indicate 6g5a circuit. Comparing both circuits I definitely have 6g5a. Oh well.

I don't like the looks of the old boards and they were soldered on many times.

Stripped the chassis and polished it some. Had to straighten the front of the amp which had a large dent.

I got caught by the same thing, although I hadn't ordered a replacement board.

After I screwed up and ordered the wrong boards, Ken Watt's came through and another set is coming the 5g6a set.

I was going to make my own but Ken made a great offer to help me out.

+1 for Ken. He's a great dude and will cut anything to size if you need him to. I get all my red stuff from him.

If you want a more original Fender replacement board, I think Mojotone will make your boards using that black Fender fiber board material.

I saw that on their website that you can contact them about making custom boards or boards that they don't normally offer.

I have the Bourns 10M-RA pot coming for the intensity pot.

Replaced all tube sockets and jacks. I tried to reuse a bunch of components but not possible. Cleaned up the front and back plates. The back plate had two extra 1/4 jacks drilled.

This amp will live again but certainly not vintage or original, oh well some amps just require extra measures.

Went through my stash of blue mold caps and short 4 of the .1/400v caps.
I have a bunch of .047/600v and 400v caps.

Mark, I think I have the .1/400V yellow Astrons (I think). Let me check tonight. I might be thinking of the .05's. Don't go buying any yet till I check.

I only have blue mold caps but have quite a few in .047, .022, .01, .02 but only 3 of the .1 mfd.

I'm sure I can just change over to .02 and .047 on the tone stacks and use the .1 in the power section.

How many of the .1/400V do you need? I do have them. I also have some .05 too. They are the yellow molded Astrons.

Thank you Don, let me know what I owe.

The schematic shows seven .1 mfd caps are needed. I would have to see how many .05 mfd caps are used. Edit: Looks like six .05 mfd caps are used but I have a bunch of blue molds I can use.

Watch your mailbox. You owe nothing. I tested them for leakage once, but I never bothered to mark them, so I'm not certain if they are all good. Seems like there might have been one leaky one in the bunch.
