Totally.

I have that amp with 6550s. We run it remotely in an air conditioned closet. ;)

I just noticed that Steve said the Major has active tone. That is the pig version. The one that doesn't blow up is passive and not designed by Marshall. Genalex designed the later to make 200rms with their KT.

Can you post the schems of both versions for comparison if you have them?

Down the page here http://www.drtube.com/marshall.htm is the later model, I have a hand drawn on my PC somewhere of the Pig. I look.

The pig owes me 2 good ears.
I was disoriented for 2 days.
The second day was 100% caused by a Marshall Pig.

Funny story. I was probably 16 or 17 years old and my Dad bought a former convenience store that had been converted to a retail outlet. It still had the walk-in freezer in the back with glass doors along one side, metal walls on two sides, and a huge three inch thick door on the last side. Concrete floor, metal ceiling. A wall had been built outside the glass doors to hide the old freezer. The room dimensions were maybe 10x15.

Since everyone bitched where ever we practiced, we got the bright idea that this would be a relatively sound-proof place to practice if we shut the huge freezer door.

The other guitarist played a 50 watt non-master volume Marshall. I played an Ampeg VT-22, 100 watts, with 4 6L6's that had to be played at 3 o'clock to get my 'tone.'

We walked out of the first practice and none of us could hear anything anyone else was saying. I seem to remember I couldn't even hear myself speak.

I'm surprised my hearing survived that incident.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

Yeah, I'm interested in seeing the earlier one you mentioned.

I've worked on 3 different versions of the Marshall Major. The best sounding had NO EQ. No T M B anyway... Fat channel, bright channel yes, much like all 4-input Marshalls, and Presence. That one was for Bearsville Studios @ 1991. I had to replace the OT and of course the kit of 4 KT88's. Advised them in the strongest but polite terms that they'd better make sure they're running the correct output impedance, and definitely never play it with no load. Bearsville's out of business but I'll bet that Major is still crankin' away somewhere. Maybe this is the Pig that Miles is talking about. I don't have a schematic, sorry.

The early one isn't UL and it never really did 200rms. I think it was more like 150 and if you turn it beyond 150 there is a loud screeeeeeeeam and then it doesn't work ever again.

Here is a PA

I think I got my scheme from Dawk around middle of 07 and started thinking. The links made me believe it might be there somewhere. Sort of is.. :)

Don't worry i don't mod an original amp without a REAL good reason and always keep everything, especialy if the amp is a piece of history !
haha that thread is funny. Piece of history as a fail. It's a piece of shit. rawr

That is weird one for sure, but it seems like the PA would handle abuse better than the "new", at least as far as voltages are concerned. What's up with the filter networks in each Treble and Bass channel? Are they playing with the phase there with the 3 coupling caps in series?

Ha, those tone controls are similar to Sound City Mk IV plus 'active' types http://soundcitysite.com/sc_50_plus.jpg

I glanced at the voltages. I don't think those are right. Could be wrong. The PIG is the model that eats OTs, the latter eats PTs. Ask me how I know.. ;)

ROE! How is Lars doin?!

I honestly haven't looked at the schematic there. The only reason I wanted the Lead scheme was for comparison between the early/late models.
