First Build Finished (with video)

Post by WilliamDouglas »

Hi Folks,

So I am finally at the final stage of my first amp build, the only thing I need is a face plate. I finished the actual amp a few months ago but I just finished building the amp cab and the speaker Cab. Anyway, Just wanted to say thanks to the folks here who took the time to help me out by responding to my posts for help.

The Amp is basically an express build with a few additions/modifications.
1- I replaced the presence control with a LAR/MAR master Volume.
2- I added a tube Bias Balance circuit.

The transformers are Hammond 1650F (Output) and 272JX (Power)
Tubes are all Electro Harmonix 12AX7, EL34

The Cabs are made from OSB, The speaker cab has a 3/4" Ply Baffle.
Cabs are Covered in creme Tolex (My first time working with Tolex)

The Speaker is a 12" 8 ohm Budda (I got it from a friend who changed out his budda cab speaker).

So if your interested, I posted a video on YouTube.

Sounds great! I liked how you took the time to heat shrink the ends of your cloth insulated wiring. Great attention to detail.

That's awesome for your first build! Be proud. It took me months of tinkering to get my Express clone to sound nearly as good as yours . . . .

Thanks Guys..I really appreciate the feedback. This thing took so long to complete (years) and so many long nights tinkering I don't know what to do with my self now  . I have to find a new project, maybe some more effects. I have been wanting to fool around with some microprocessor based guitar effects.

Great! I love the clean stuff early on, and the dirty stuff sounds very righteous. I would like to have that amp for a project I did about two years ago... DAMN! We used a Supro with someone's tube driver to get almost that.. not quite..

Love it!

Congratulations on making such a good amplifier. The work is so clean. Mine tends to be a little more .....functional. Thanks for the clip. Chris' playing is great of course, but the amp really shines. Good clean and warm tones. And as you mention in the clip, thanks to your wife. Our mates really endure a lot as we pursue our tone quest. I wish my first build was so clean. Hell, I wish my last build was! What's next?

I was gonna look into some effects but my son asked if we could build an amp together for him. Of course he wants a 100 watt head and a 4x12 cab.. :D
