Oscillo-WOW! Can we get a live demo together?

Post by xtian »

Do you remember your first time looking through a microscope (or telescope)? Opened up a whole new world, didn't it?

I now have a o-scope (BK Precision 2120B dual trace 30MHz) and a function generator (Krohn-Hite 1000A). I'm injecting a 1KHz signal at 1vac at the guitar input on my Clubman build. And like my first look through a microscope, I'm amazed by what I see.

1. The phase of the sine wave shifts as I dial the tone control! I've never seen time domain effects in action. Total newbie thing to say, but what a revelation.

2. Increased gain in later stages affects the gain of previous stages (previous stage amplitude decreases a bit).

3. Distorion and clipping shapes! There's a whole menagerie to learn and recognize! Where do I find mugshots and descriptions of these guys?

Look, I'd love to have a Skype videoconference with someone knowledgeable. We can pack 10 people into a Skype chat (more if we go to WebEx or something), using my bench as a test bed, and do some investigation and nerd herd larnin.

Any takers?

Save the video and post it for those who can't do it live.

I've had a scope for years, and I'm still learning ways to use it. I think the most fun for me was when I built an Express, and started scoping each stage at the onset of distortion. I could 'see' what it was doing and understand why it sounded the way it did.

It's not only a diagnostic machine, it's a learning machine. It connects schematics, ears, and seeing all together.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

A scope can help you understand many things. I couldn't get along without one.

Too bad I didn't have a scope back in my psychedelic days....
Don't you boys know any NICE songs?

I'm here with you!
Congrats.

I told you once you got going, it isn't as difficult as it seems.
And you'll be hooked!

I like vintage scopes...lots of switches and dials to play with.
