So is it just the original tubes that cause the suckage?M Fowler wrote:Believe me I had no idea how much I would like the Peavey Classic 30 until I retubed the amp and took it for a test drive with my Les Paul. It had everything I want from a tube amp, I really like it. The guy is coming over tomorrow.vibratoking wrote:Mark, I just noticed in another thread that you have a Classic 30 in your shop and you like the tone? Interesting. These things must vary widely cause the one I have heard is pitiful. I mean not even close to anything I would call worth listening to. Thin, shrill, no bass, icepick in your ear, no mids... huh

Yes replacing the tubes took out all noise it was producing starting with the preamp tubes and as I keep on replacing it got better and better. So is it just the original tubes that cause the suckage?
He picked it up at a local pawn shop cheap which I didn't realize pawn shops in my area knew how to let something go cheap. The amp had intermittent noise as you played and turn up gain. I went over the guts but didn't find anything bad so then start tube rolling. All tubes are now JJ's.
He has the option of just going with one or two new preamp tubes, or get his own tubes, and/or final option to buy my set. His choice plus bench charge of course.

thanks for all the comments
Mark - Not with all the bells and whistles. This is my first electronics project ever. It will be 30W, but with only the functionality of the 20W version.
vibratoking - Appeal. That is, this amp's sound appeals to me. I've played/tried several amps with my Jag and when I tried this one that was it. I think this should be the reason for choosing the amp. If it were the case that this amp's sound did not appeal to me, then I wouldn't have bothered. Since there is no mind-independent source of appeal, our opinions are going to be shaped by culture and personal experiences... highly subjective.
JoeCon - thanks for the suggestions; kinda nervous
cbass - Building the amp will bring me a great deal satisfaction and enjoyment. This is not a money-saving project.

I also noticed how speedy I am at responding.
 School has been killing me.
I have quite a bit of what I need already.
Left to purchase:
the PT
some misc caps, diodes and resistors, a switch
one more 12ax7, the matched EL84's
still need the five knobs from the Classic 20. I'm struggling here to understand what it is that I'm buying. They are:
1MAMSP5 - 1 MEG AUD 5% MET SPIDER
1MAMSP5 - 1 MEG AUD 5% MET SPIDER
20KSMS - 20K S TAP MET SPIDER
250KBMS - 250K LIN METRIC SPIDER
POT0303 - 1 MEG AUD 20% MET SPIDER 1MM
In the meantime, I think I'll pick up Merlin's book.

As I look down at the floor here, I see a Kay Model 700 transistor. It used to be my dad's. I grew with my dad playing his '64 Jaguar through it. They are both mine now. It's interesting how culture influences what we find appealing.
