Along with the yoga, try Tai Chi. I used to do it in the Seventies (I need to practice what I preach, as well...). The neat thing about Tai Chi is that even if you don't perform it correctly (it requires mental discipline as well as physical, so you get mind and body), you look like some kind of pseudo-Bruce Lee badass! :D

I've always wanted to learn Tai Chi. Since I now live in Seattle I should probably take it up. There are plenty of instructors here. When I first got interested in it there were no instructors where I lived. I ended up taking Akido, and still had to drive 45 minutes to the dojo.

I eventually gave it up. There is so much joint twisting that I was continually sore.

Amen to that! I'm not far behind you and relatively new to amp building. But I want to do a nice Dumble, maybe a 124, before I retire and can't afford the parts.

Well, I may be the odd one out here, but I'm 26 and "perfectly" healthy (although my only exercise is waking the dog and lifting amps). Here's the thing - I'm absolutely terrified of losing my health because I have no insurance and can't afford it. I'm actually trying to get my Italian citizenship so i can move there one day. I'm sure my great grandparents are rolling in their graves at the thought that I'm trying to go back to where they fled from for a better life. The irony is sickening! Pardon the pun!! I wish everyone the best of health cause who else's is gonna help me troubleshoot?

You can't do much about impcted wisdom teeth or other genetic problems, but let's face it , studying electronics, building amps, and playing instruments are all pretty sedentary activities. If you also indulge a taste for un-healthy (read tasty) foods, and or smoke, your health will deteriorate. Make time for exercise, even if it is unstructured and informal. Get out. If you walk your dog, he will benefit (and appreciate it) too.

I sympathize - thats how I was feeling a few years ago....so I

-cut back on the drinking
-started regular excersize - walk 2x day - run 2x week, lift weights 2-3 x week + lots of other around the house fixin & sweatin
-eat only 'real food' no canned preservative junk
-lots of herbal tea/water

with the less drinking and excersize I started feeling better - after a few years of it most people think I am 10 years younger than they would have guessed 5 years ago. And I can sleep some of the time now - which is big cause it used to be never.

And since I've been on the no-preservatives, real food only kick - have not gotten sick once in a couple of years, and I get sick a lot so thats a real kicker. I dont think preservatives kill you - they gunk you up and 'preserve' you. I hear a lot of people tell me 'hasnt killed me yet' - just wait buddy.

it does work.

Might be awhile before I can start. I go to my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I have shoulder impingement. Not sure how I got it, I just keep waking up every morning with a sore shoulder.

Late 2012 and early 2013 has been the worst stretch of health problems for me in my entire life. I'm 54, so hopefully it's a wake up call. I've been eating better and exercising and dropped 10 pounds down to 189. I'd like to lose another 10. Or at least redistribute the weight from fat to muscle.

But once the shoulder is better, I think I'd really like to get into Tai Chi or Kung Fu. Some type of martial arts that concentrates on forms. To practice Akido, you really need a sparring partner.

There's a Shaolin Kung Fu place up on 130th off Aurora that does all the animal forms. I'm thinking about getting my Drunken Monkey, Pissed off Tiger groove on, once I get over the Old Fart That Can't Lift His Arm Above His Head form. :D

This is a bit off-kilter, but while you're recuperating, rent a copy of "The Killer Elite" with James Caan. Caan is shot in the elbow and knee. To recover his ability to exact revenge, he takes up Tai Chi, Kung Fu and Cane Fighting. Not a great film, but Caan and Burt Young are very good in it.

Had to mention this as the thread turned strangely this way! :D

I feel better, today! Right now! No idea about later but I feel almost awesome, for now, this minute.

What day is it? Yikes.

Kidding. I have the same issue you do, my job was on my feet all day doing research in a five floor courthouse. Now, I do it all in front of a computer.
Damn! Where did these pounds come from?

I hear ya.

My job was very strenuous and I pretty much relied on that to keep me in shape.
I was about 180 lbs for years.
At 6' 2" it was a good weight for me.

Now, since I haven't worked in a few years, I have gained about 30 pounds and my belly is big.
I know I have the extra weight but I also know my stomach muscles have gone to pasture.....

I really hate exorcises but I'm going to have to do something aerobic to burn the fat and tone the muscles.
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!
