Yeah this was what I was thinking. I can screen scrape and do it myself, might be nicer if I could get a db dump.
Yeah, without cPanel access... that sounds like a lot of work. I'm not sure what their cPanel looks like. But I'm sure Allyn could setup an FTP user and a backup job so you could script something for backup mirroring.
I agree, there is a shit load of excellent information on this site and it would be a crying shame if disappeared. There used to be a 3rd party Two Rock BB hosted by dhenderson that disappeared from existence... it was a bummer.
hmm... im on siteground where I run a wordpress site to keep extended family updated with photos of my family/daughter as she grows (keeps people off my facebook)
anyway I was checking out some of the backup options and full backup is disabled because my site is greater than 500mb. No scheduling options either without adding services to the monthly charge. but the monthly charge is reasonable, especially if my content was this site!
I'd suspect hostmonster has a similar model.
I did see some wget options to offline mirror phpbb3. But I don't think you ever get a version of the site that is production ready. and I don't think you get enough latitude on a shared host to do some of the cool tricks you could do with root.
Hostmonster does offer "courtesy backups" what exactly is that?
Losing this place scares the shit out of me too.
Sounds like you IT guys have the chops to make rebirth after armageddon possible - impressive to us mere mortals.
Also seems like it would involve some effort & maybe incur some cost.
I'm thinking voluntary contributions might help.
Don't know how Allyn feels about this, but backups are never a bad thing to have. I know this...
@cbass
I can't even lift things bud - my back is screwed up.
Dumb & weak. Old & fat.
Be Happy!

Look what happened to 18Watt.com by example. Their forum got hosed and each time they restored, they would roll back the database to a couple of weeks before, losing everyone's current line of posts. This kept happening where they would restore, roll back, and then it would get hosed again. After a supposed major rebuild, the attachment indexing was trashed. So, none of the attachments (or very, very few) actually related to their parent posts. Complete mess which rendered a once-interesting forum pretty much useless.
Doesn't look like anything is missing but the site was down for a good 6 hours during the day on Thursday. Disk controller card was said to have been replaced.
