Going down like a ten dollar crack whore.
TAG has really been having some issues lately. Honestly, it scares the crap out of me. I don't want to be disconnected from my friends, and I don't want to lose the huge amount of knowledge that has been shared here over the last eight years.
The site is hosted by hostmonster.com, and if they can't be competent enough to keep a fairly low traffic site up, how confident can we be in their backup procedures?
I would like to backup all of TAG, storing a copy not only on my local systems, but to the Amazon Cloud.
A daily backup of the db, and an rsync of the attachments would insure some level of safety.
Allyn, is this possible?

backups are great... they're like a helmet; you wear one when you ride, but heaven forbid you should really ever need to use it. It seemed like the host did perform a data restore/recovery, as there were a few moments when the server responded to http requests, but the mysql database and php pieces weren't running.
In my humble opinion, I thought the downtime was pretty harsh. It was just about all day!!! In a world of VMWare vMotion and virtualization/redundancy, downtime like that just doesn't happen at modern datacenters... although I will say that both azure and aws have had some hard knocks in the past. I think Netflix went down over the holidays and it was on AWS.
How much is Hostmonster charging? It'd be good to understand what budgetary numbers TAG is working with before I start popping off too much. Siteground has been very reliable for me, and I know there are a ton of other hosting options.
What was wrong with the raid card exactly?

Apparently nothing. It's like the old joke about DEC salesmen having a flat tire, they'll keep swapping out tires until the car runs again.brentm wrote: What was wrong with the raid card exactly?
I have zero confidence in hostmonster.
I once worked for a company that lost four man months of software development, because the guy that set up the backup routines never tested a restore.
I've quit jobs because they didn't have a five nines attitude.

The place where you deposit your money has a manager that is either a drunk or an idiot. What should we do with our money?cbass wrote:I have no idea what you are talking about.

But you have deposited a bit of wisdom on this forum. We're talking about an idiot erasing everything we contributed here.cbass wrote:I keep mine in the form of gold buried in a mason jar somewhere.

We're talking about what would happen one day if we woke up and TAG was gone forever, and how to avoid that.cbass wrote:Thats the problem I don't understand what is being talked about.

So Hostmonster is $6.95 a month. That's a tough sell to move to a new host... and at $6.95 a month, hard to expect five 9's.. that's 5 minutes of downtime a year. I think that last event put them at 99.5%
LeftyStrat - are you getting backups to your local PC now? How about Dropbox solution to keep the data spread out? AWS would be OK; are you thinking their free tier of linux boxes to mirror to?
How about Dropbox from your local backups? And are you keeping any backup history, or just one current backup?

Yeah this was what I was thinking. I can screen scrape and do it myself, might be nicer if I could get a db dump.brentm wrote: AWS would be OK; are you thinking their free tier of linux boxes to mirror to?
