Soldering Temp

Post by ronman »

What temperature do you guys solder at. I recently bought a used soldering station that has a temperature readout and was wondering.

I run mine at 700F most of the time. I'll push it up to as much as 800F if I am soldering something large and having a difficult time with it.

As low as I can to comfortably get the job done...650 for me with the solder I use. If I have to push up the temp I MIGHT, but I also am aware that I can do damage and that I am probably using the wrong iron or tip for the job at that point.

Are we talking lead based solder?

60/40 or 63/37?

I use the eutectic 63/37 @ around 700F.

800F - hot, clean, fast,

My Weller is the bottom line w/o display but it's always maxed. I clean the tip (ETA?) continuously, I move fast. I even do circuit boards like this unless I hit a snag then I might simmer down. Always w/ Kester 44 (.05 for tubes amps) I usually use heat sink clips too. Radio Shack has these small fake copper alligators that are very small and have non serrated jaws.

666 mostly
752 for rework
drop the station down to 300 while picking my nose

Actually, for the solder I use at the moment, that 666 is rather hot:
"Future" cored, no clean, 63/37 tin-lead from Warton Metals in the UK
and WBT-0840 audio fool solder from Germany for anything stubborn or pretty. I'm using the WBT more and more now in fact. Wonderful to use.

I looked up the WBT - 0840.

4% silver but it has a pretty low melting point @ 356F

Not sure I would use that on a tube amp but I'm not sure how hot things get in there.

Tom I had never really thought about that and realize now that I do not even know how hot in °F or °C the leads of some of the resistors may get. I would be surprised if they got that hot, but stand to be corrected.

I really, really did not want to like the WBT solder but it does so well where others just refuse to work.
