I am fixing an Ernie Ball VP Jr. for someone, just replacing the spring/string setup (kind of a nightmare in itself, but that's another story). So I got the string installed and, trying to be nice to my customer and prevent any scratchiness (there was a little), sprayed some Deoxit (the 100% stuff with no solvent) and it completely killed the pot. Just a tiny spritz and it died. The two outer lugs still measure ~200k or whatever but I can get no action out of the wiper lug. Just reads open no matter what I do.
I can replace the pot no problem but I'm very frustrated that I even have to do this.. It's a modern pot, not some delicate vintage part, so I didn't expect that at all.. Shit!
Anybody else have this happen?

Re: Deoxit ruined pot?
I have one. The pot is cheap crap. You can try to flush it w/ anhydrous alcohol....but I don't think DeOxit killed it.
I replaced mine w/ a CTS. Still not as nice as the older full size vol pedals they used to make.

Don't overthink it. Just drink it.
Re: Deoxit ruined pot?
It's a modern pot with a plastic element that contact cleaner will just EAT.
Contact cleaner is for switches.
Sorry you had to learn the hard way.
You want Deoxit Fader Lube for pots.
Hope this helps!

Re: Deoxit ruined pot?
I have the fader lube. It works wonders.
As far as the problem, I found it... I broke the pot being too rough with it. A new one was really expensive so this is gonna be a freebie pretty much. Fack me!

Re: Deoxit ruined pot?
It has happened to me enough that I no longer use Deoxit on pots. I only use Caig Fader lube on pots these days. I still use deoxit for everything else.

oh ya... there is a difference between cleaner and lube.
read the label for a plastics safety statement
flush then re-lube

Don't keep your stash on your bench... oh, never mind.
Before I read Billy's old post warning of this I sprayed this stuff into pots like it was holy water. Even new pots, many many, never a problem luckily, though I now won't do it anymore. I sprayed it into old amp pots and new Alphas, CTS - so, is it just real cheap plastic pots that get wrecked, do the carbon, phenolic, metal ones hold up better? Alphas are really cheap, money-wise anyway. Does it dissolve the carbon or whatever glues it on?
