Friends,
I finished another 5e3 and have been having some troubling sounds with adventitous white noise. The guitar sounds great but there is intermittent white noise that I haven't been able to figure out. It sounds a bit like hiss when you tune in a radio. It has no impact on the sound of the guitar. Any ideas where this might be coming from? I would like to rule out the usual suspects. Thanks.

Re: white noise
that sounds like it could be a bad solder join, resistor noise... carbon comp can do that, it might be a plate resistor, It could also be shot noise from a tube...
turn it up with nothing plugged into the input, and chop stick the tubes, resistors and wire dress, take wooden stick and tap and wiggle components, wires and tubes... see if you can't track it down.

Some preamp tubes hiss more than others, roll a few more through the amp.
I agree with Andy, could be carbon noise if you used the carbon comp resistors.

Re: white noise
Preliminary testing point to bummer power tubes. I'm not sure yet as it's hard to think it was such an easy fix. My dog was knawing on a bone but I'm pretty sure the noise was from him and not from the amp.

Re: white noise
I had an act come thru with one of those atomic verby things.
every sound check I had to reach into the back and manually wiggle the hot 6v6's
they would make a tone, it wasn't feeding, weird... give them a wiggle and they were fine
burnt me self a couple times, crap tubes
