I wasn't joking about the heat gun! I wouldn't recommend using it in tight spaces, but it has worked well on stripped chassis for me.

The torch idea isn't really so bad. You can get soldering iron tips for propane torches. Just get it hotter than hades, turn off the gas, and go at it. An alternative is an old fashioned soldering iron that is basically a chunk of copper on a stick. You heat it with a torch and then have at it. Those have been used for a long time to solder sheet goods, so they should work to remove solder as well.

I ended-up getting this 80W weller as Billyz Suggested...works great...as Deric remarked, I Wish I had gotten one of these years ago!

Now yer rockin' pula! Good goin' matey. If there's too much heat for some applications you can dial down the heat with a variac, or even a cheapo triac dimmer.

I ran across this Craigslist ad this morning and thought about this thread. Would a 300 watt iron do the job?

I might buy this thing and use it to heat my workshop.

Not sure that one would work well..... Plenty of wattage but you really want a wide chisel tip.
Should heat the shop fine though!
