Two cabs

Post by JoeCon »

Guys

A friend want to run two cabs off his amp. His 2 x 12 goes into the 8 ohm output but his other cab, a single 12, is a 16 ohm speaker that he wants to plug into a 16 ohm output. Should he do this?

I told him that's not "kosher"! Am I right?? Just seems wrong...

Using two OT taps at once? Not the best idea.He could wire the 2 8ohms in series for 16 ohms. Then wire the 16 ohm in parallel for an 8 ohm load

As long as the load is higher than the amp there should be no damage.

Is the 2x12 2 16's in parallel, or 2 8's in series?

the 2x12 is 8 ohm total? So it would have to be two four ohm in series or two 16 ohm in parallel. If its 2 four ohm I'm not sure of a good way to use them together with a 16 ohm

Guys

Without opening the 2-12 I told him get another 8 ohm 12 for his single cab and run them in series for 16. Right? Trying to keep it simple for him.

If he does have 3 16 ohm what then! LOL!

How would you cable that (speaker leads to/from both cabs and amp)?

It's not possible to know the best answer since there are different switching and non-switching configurations on amp output jacks. A schematic would shown the ramifications of doing what he proposes.
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.
