Orange Micro Terro - 12AU7 or 12AY7?

Post by Kinkless Tetrode 66 »

I can not find the circuit for the Micro Terror. I do not have any experience with hybrid amps... Could you put in 12AY7 or a 12AU7. I know that these tube are very different, but do not know how it would affect the amp (I am attempting to get some more clean headroom...).

Also is there a replace the US kettle lead for EU or UK?

Thanks

you can sub in a 12AY7

might be able to get away with 12AU7 but not knowing the current capacity of the power transformer, I would avoid it. This tube type draws significantly more current than the 12AX7 that is already in there. AY should be a near-perfect replacement and will give the illusion of more headroom

reason I say that is because on a low power amp like that, there is very little headroom to begin with - you will eventually hit the ceiling no matter what tube you use in V1. The AY will offer more control between clean volume settings, but ultimately it will still have the exact same amount of clean headroom as before.

Go to nearest Kaufhof, household appliance department, and buy a standard IEC Gerätschnur aka kettle lead. :D
If asked, I would design this around 12AU7 but you never know these micro terrorists.

Thanks guys. No problems with EHX 12AY7! (Do not really give more clean headroom...but it actually sounds better to me)

A 12AY7 or 12BZ7 or 5751 can be run in a circuit designed for a 12AX7 and you will notice improvement in bandwidth. (A 12BZ7 draws 2 x as much heater current).

You won't get anything much worthwhile with a 12AU7 unless you adjust the load and the bias point.

A 12AT7 will also sound bland unless you adjust the load and the bias point

Is there anyway to increase the overall output? Has anyone modded?

Thanks!

Apparently you did not test your amp well before buying it, or maybe it was a gift. But if you wanted more clean headroom with more output power you should of bought a bigger amp.

Anyhow, one of the ways you can mod to make it louder is to change de speaker to a more efficient one. Check the specs on the Celestion Patriot series of speakers:

http://www.eminence.com/guitar-bass/patriot-series/

On the next to the last column you will see "SENSITIVITY", the higher the number the "louder" it will sound to you compared to one with a lower sensitivity.

I would suggest to post your request in an Orange forum, as you are most likely find more info there on which particular speaker people have tested to be "louder" with your model amp.

I don't have a vast knowledge on transistor outputs stages although I have fixed a few, and what I can tell you is that it doesn't seem an easy thing to do particularly on a PCB amp. Perhaps some of the more experienced guys can chip in.

All the best.
Horacio

It was a gift... I personally would have picked something louder... Thanks for the advice though...
