So, I cranked the Manzamp up today and got this singing and sustaining tone. Almost like a compressor. I have heard other clips of people's amps that do this, but none of my other amps do this. Maybe this is what the Manzamp is supposed to do.

This sample is miked with SM57 through a Mesa 4x10 Alnico Cabinet. Guitar is a PRS Custom 24 from 1995 that I just got yesterday on Craigslist (I always wanted a PRS, but though they were too expensive; this one was a bargain).

Very cool sound. It's got kind of an Albert King vibe to it.

Found an old thread on cathode inductors that might be of interest:

I loved that SoundClick clip! Great tone and playing!

THANKS for sharing it! That is a very musically sweet sounding amp.

Have you thought about the idea of adding an OD channel to a future ManzAmp style amp?

I LOVE that sound. Just so softly before any hint of grain.. so smooth.

Excellent work!
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

Great clip ic, that is a great sound. I have a plexi clone I built that I don't use now that I built an ODS and a D'Lite, and it can tell I'm looking at it in a new light. Hmmmm.
10thTx, I had the same thought, nice work man.
Thanks to you all for putting ideas in my head.

Wow! IC that is a really great tone. Well done and thank you again for sharing. I am definately going to try this one out! Not sure if you have answered this one, but do you mind me asking what type/make of inductors/chokes you used in the preamp? Great work.

I got the chokes off e-bay. I used three of the ones that were said to be 1.0 Henry. I bought a bunch of them and some were too big, or at least bigger than what I think is in the Manzamp picture.

Same with the big ceramic resistors. I got those off ebay.

That's some great tone, ic! When I read what you said about how it sounds like a compressor when cranked, I immediately thought of my 5E3 clone. After listening to your clip, I realize you meant compressor with regards to a clean tone (the 5E3 only shows this attribute when heavy overdrive / distortion is present, and it's one of the things I love most about that amp). So, just to be clear, you did not use a compressor, either in your guitar / amp signal chain or during the mix-down, right? Great tone, and great attack! Congrats!

Cheers,
Lou

Exactly. When I made that clip the amp sounds clean but has sustain, kind of like if one were to have used a compressor. It was not feeding back either.

Last night I tried some boxes through the amp with very good results, TS-9 sounded very good.

Yes, SSS type of sustain. In fact I have been following the SSS threads because of the similarity in build era and PCB construction between Manzamp and SSS. Initially I was also looking for similarities in the preamp circuit, but in the end my conclusion was that there were not many similarities in the circuit.
