25W SE OT

Post by EtherealWidow »

Found this. Thought it might be kind of cool. I've heard of guys using 15W SE transformers for things like 5F1's and they report a broader bandwidth with more dynamics. I dunno though. After a while it just seems excessive. Then again, provided the PT can supply enough amps for an EL34 maybe it would benefit. What do you guys think?

You building a 5F1? Looks like WAY overkill even if you go for a 6l6GC or El34. This is likely designed for SE Hifi with extended bandwidth (think 300B) and are more like 40W for a guitar amp. It'll be clean! For what it is it's a great price. Edcor have a 10W which I've used in a 5C1 and it's nice, gave the 5C1 a touch of Hiwatt like quality, clean and clangy. Doesn't sound like a Fender but it's sounds great and everyone who tries it loves it.

The two Allen offers will sound more Fender and guitar correct, I can vouch for the T08C.

Very much plenty of big SE OTs out there in hifiland if you insist. Report back if you actually try any:

Not building a 5F1. Building something similar though. Found a schematic that claimed to be that of an Allen Class Act. Talked to Allen though, and he said that he didn't release that schematic and would rather not discuss it. Very nice guy though. Makes sense that the Edcor would be for HiFi applications. Doubt I'll use it. The 5F1 reference was because I've heard of people using 15W OT's in them for their 6V6's & EL84's. I figured that if you had an EL34 in the Class Act, 25W might be a little neat, if not ridiculous.

Even an EL34 will only develop 12.5W max in SE, so 25W is overkill. The gating factor in SE OTs is the continuous current rating (what Hammond calls DC bias). The wattage rating is more related to the bandwidth it can pass. In SE, it isn't so bad to have an OT that can't reproduce 60Hz.

I'd grab it. You could make a parallel SE.

Parallel SE sounds amazing, but again I think it might be overkill. 2 EL34's would be pushing it, and if I were to use smaller tubes like 6V6's or EL84's I'd have to use like 4 of them to make it not so overkill which from what I've heard would be an unstable power section. Mixing big and small tubes in the same power section would be a huge pain.

I'm using a KT88 in an SE amp. It's got a 20 watt SE OT (from Doberman). Even though it's a 42 watt tube it only develops 17 - 18 watts in SE configuration. Not sure how much parallel EL34s would yield but nowhere near what they do in Class AB (IIRC).

See. That's what I'm talking about. I know of the 20w doberman OT, so I figured that 5 more watts might offer a little more clarity and punch in an SE amp. Wasn't looking for THAT much clean headroom though :?

OR - if an experienced builder an 845 Filamentary Triode at 850V anode to filament and about 80 to 85mA idle will get you 20 to 25W into 5K primary.

Not rugged enough for road use but would make a nice "boottik" home amp.
Cheers,
Ian
