What can I do with this?

Post by rhubarb9999 »

I just picked this amp up for $30. It is a Earth Sound Research B-1000 Superbass amp. I have done some research and it appears to be either a Bassman or Marshall Bass clone. 4 - 6L6GC tubes and 3 - 12AX7's.

What can I do with this? I have been totally drooling over a Trainwreck or even better .. a Komet 60. I think all that I can use is the trannies and the chassis.

The schematic I found is for the B-2000 .. same amp but with an extra input channel.

My schematic reading skills are not the best. Is there a way to figure out the outputs of the power tranny based on the schematic? If not, how can I use a VOM to figure it out? I have not tried to turn the amp on, found a big cap not attached. I will solder that up tonight and fire it up. It came with tubes, but most of the lettering has rubbed off.

It looks like the output tranny has an extra tap that is not used. From the factory, only the 4 ohm tap is wired to the speaker outputs. I read on another forum that the unused tap is 8 ohm. Any way that I can test what the primary tap on the OT is? For quad 6L6's, what should it be?

So my questions are .. How do I find out the values of these trannys and are they suitable for use in a Trainwreck?

Once I figure that out ... then comes the millions of questions about building one (my first build ... can you tell?) :D

BTW, love this board !

email Glenn over at Sweetwood Guitars. He converted one into a Komet. Loves it, but thinks it's too loud

The preamp looks very similar to a late BF Bassman. Even the power amp is similar but it looks more like a BF guitar amp. It might sound pretty good like it is or should be able to sound good with a few tweaks. With there being 4 power tubes it just seems that making a Trainwreck out of it is going to be painfully loud. I think I'd be more inclined to try and make a Dumble out of it.

I was thinking of just using 2 tubes. I don't know if the output of the power transformer can be knocked down (or if it needs to be) to handle it.

A lot of the parts are dried out .. a few of the leads on the caps have broken. My plan is to gut the thing and put in turret board and start from scratch. The chassis has all kinds of holes in it .. probably used for all the Earth models ... so I can add pots, switches, whatever to it. Once it's done I will get a new faceplate made.

Keeping that I mind, I am really curious what I can do with these transformers.

holy crap! another one. i actually thought it sounded good as a bass amp...i'm not much of a bass player though.

anyway, you have to strip out all the shiyt. I got new OT for the Komet 60. Currently, the original OT are in a Plexi at Dart's...which I need to pick up one of these days. Anyway, I'll send you all my stuff. I built the 60 using HiWatt style turrets. There is a perfect fit for everything sans Filter. I'll try and get to it this weekend. The layout is very much noise free and convenient.

All the controls are left to right, so Allyn's drawings will be backwards.

Looks like it is going to become a Komet :):):)

I will run 2 power tubes ... may have to get a new OT but the PT should work just fine.

Wish me luck!
