Hi -- brand new member here. I have the chance to purchase an Express clone made by Hall Amplification. It appears to be in very good condition, cherry (?) cab. What would be a fair price? And while we are at it, what would it cost to have a tech add a VVR to it?
Thanks.

Price for a Hall Express clone?
Be nice to me. I have no idea what I'm doing.
Re: Price for a Hall Express clone?
In my experience:
If you commission from scratch: $3-4k
If you pay for parts and labor slightly above min wage: $2k
Typical used price for unknown (but excellent!) clones: $1k
Hall VVR costs $32, probably 2 hours to install.

Re: Price for a Hall Express clone?
The Express is fixed bias so it would require VVR3, so that would be $50 instead of $30.
Re: Price for a Hall Express clone?
I've built some cathode biased express type amps, with VVRs in them.Because the person wanted to use 6v6s. But still could use EL34s if they ever wanted to. The Express amps were not cathode biased amps that i know of. But it can be done very easy.
Its best to know ahead of time. Then you can use multi section can caps. and have a nice place to put the board and mosfet.
Adding it to an amp already builtamp is not as easy. It can be done. Might depend on where you want to put it.
Just much easier if you know ahead of time.
As for a used amp and price, thats a good question. I've had amps sell used for alot more than i charged to build them. Sometimes it may depend on which amp, and what is used. I've also seen them sell for less, but not much.
Dana builds some amps that use plexi faceplates and have tolexed cabs.
Sometimes people may not want a cherry cab,or exact clone. They may just want it to sound like a wreck type amp.
Many times you may find alot of the expense is in the Cab. Some of those can be costly depending on how fancy or type wood used. And if you have done cab work , alot of work and time can go into a cab,and the finish.
Looking at the post above, looks like i should double my price.
Just speaking for myself, i don't recall ever selling any amp i built for 2k
Dana may have on the Pegasus amp, but its like 2 amps in one. The Liverpool and Rocket combined with footswitching and VVR etc.
Takes a while to build that amp. Plus more parts etc..
As many builders are probably finding out, many of the parts of the more real type clones is getting harder to find.
That may reflect on the price of an amp. Like Glens amps, or some of Allyns, that use almost every part exact, or using Stancor 3801 to NOS stacpole switch, loaded with NOS hand picked tubes,to whatever. Thats when an amp may cost much more. But if its a cherry cab, and has good quality parts and hasn't been rebuilt modded etc. Then the poster above is probably in the ballpark of a used price.
Like anything, what something is worth,is what someone is will to pay for it.

Richie-built Liverpool
FYI, Richie sold me one of his Liverpool tribute amps a little over a year ago, and it is phenomenal! Super-low noise floor, tons of volume, incredible tone, and very versatile. It absolutely sings with my Strat with single coils, but handles pretty much every guitar I use with great tone. Just passing that along...

Greg
