Review your Rig here!!

Post by talbany »

Hey everyone..
I thought it would be cool to do a Rig review thread...A picture would be great.. :D Also tell us what you like about your set up and what you don't like..What type of Music you play and guitars you prefer with that rig..Effects/D-lator/ pedals you use and why..Don't forget Tubes!,,,Perhaps this might help some out there who are unsure about which circuit to use and we can draw a consensus about which circuits most players prefer with certain guitars or styles of music or more importantly working conditions of that amp..Also don't forget about speaker designs (which ones you tried that worked and which ones that didn't)...If you have more than 1 Dumble circuit in the stable this would be awesome if you could tell us which ones you prefer over the other and why...I'll begin working on mine but let's get it started...
Please don't be shy.. those guy's who build amps out there and have a deep knowledge on the different circuits I ask PLEASE!! try to participate..

Thanks to all those who post their review!!

So far I have built, 1-#124 first build = the bloom master.
2-#183 one 50 watt and a 100 watt the 100 watt is the amp I play the most around 400+ hours so far.
1-#70 early skyline eq. non reverb. 100 watt EL-34 with half power switch it's a combo with a 1-12" EV-12S. with clean and overdrive ratio pots on the back of the chassis.
Working on a generation 3 low plate non skyline eq. 100 watt 6l6gc made in usa. half power switch and overdrive ratio on the rear of the chassis. 1969 Fender Twin PT. Rare Woodward-Schumacker OPT with 4,8 ohm output taps 1981. With deep switch.
As far as preamp tubes Sylvania/Philips 7025 made in usa. matched sections used in V-1 and V-2
For the PI 6057 siemans made in 1961. I scored a sleeve of 5 all read 110/110 on the tube tester.
I like the PAB. and Overdrive so much the only Efx. I use is a Yamaha Analog delay Model E 1010.
Don't use the Delay just the preamp in the loop as a line level of sorts.
The 3rd generation amp will be my last ODS build. On to the SSS amp next or back to it.
It's been great fun, Steve. :D

Thanks for the rundown!!

A few questions..
Do you have a favorite amp in the collection?..If so why?
Also is there anything about that Fav amp that you don't like or would change?

Thanks!!

Tony, #183 100 watt is one of the best sounding amp's to my ears it took well over six months to source the correct value parts, and a custom wound PT 1968 Marshall OPT and choke. I think is the key to the this amp.
I have a 250pf and 540pf bright switch on 250p the amp nails the Jimmy Page tone and @ 540pf.
EVH and more and the fet input is so clean. #183 works so well with any guitar.
One change was the power supply filters 33uf @ 450v not 47uf, which sums up to 16.5uf Plexi Marshall or Tweed Fender value. What I'm trying to say is this amp Rock's and the first gig I played was all soft Jazz standing ovations after each song, I'm working on a project now using a 12 string Ovation 1866 Legend in the fet input. The amp is 3-D. In the past I used two amps to get my sound no need for that now. One thing not much Bloom just clean sustain forever and harmonic's so rich.

This is my main stage rig. I play everything from classic Country to Metal on jobs, but tend to lean towards bluesy roots music when I'm playing what I like most. For rehearsals and low-volume jobs I'll just bring one cab (significantly less volume since I'm running an 8 ohm load into a 4 ohm OT) and a smaller board with just tuner, delay and volume pedal. I stopped using dirt pedals the day I finished my #102 clone. :) I run the amp gain somewhat lower and use the PAB when I need to go crazy.

Signal Chain:
Classic '60s Strat with Lollar Special Pickups, Illitch Backplate, and Vilex passive mid-boost->
Fulltone Clyde Std. Wah-> Polytune->Vibulator (modded Phase '90 used for faux-Leslie sound)->Boss PS-3 (modded for true-bypass - used for detuned chorus effect)->Impulse Trem (Madbean DoubleFlush trem build - used mostly as an always on buffer/boost)->
#102 clone amp ->
==Amp Loop Send==
D'Lator Clone ->
==D'lator Loop==
MXR Carbon Copy -> Visual Volume Pedal ->
==D'Lator Loop Return==
(Reverb in D'Lator)
==Amp Loop Return==
Two Forte 3D1x12 speaker cabs each loaded with a single G12-65

Likes:
- Amazingly expressive overdrive sound.
- Great sound at any volume with the Volume Pedal in the loop.
- Fairly portable weight-wise.
- The Forte cabs have great dispersion and punch and are pretty consistent sounding from room to room.

Dislikes:
- Tough to get the clean volume as loud as overdrive (I use the VP as a bandaid for this)
- Kind of a PITA to set up with all the connections.
- The head's kind of ugly. :)

Sorry to hijack the thread here. Quick question for Aaron: How do you like the Fulltone Clyde Wah? Can it get that super throaty sound of the vintage Vox wahs?

Thanks,
Lou

My old Vox reissue from the '90s was actually throatier. I'm not a huge wah guy, though. It sounds much better with batteries for some reason. I actually banished the Clyde to the pedalboard of shame in the basement for several months. Then I recently tried it with just a battery and decided to give it another chance.

I still rarely use it. Some people (like Robben Ford) are great with it. Other people make it sound like a cliche. I tend to fall in the latter group. :(

I don't have as much as a lot of you guys but I have a 50w D'lite that was sort of a experimental amp to
see if I liked the D tone.
That amp has so many tweaked parts on it, it's hard to remember what all I did.

Then last year I built a 100w ODS from scratch.
That was a fun challenge and I got a lot of help here with that build.
It sort of started as a RF #102 build but later when #183 was revealed I adjusted some parts to see if I liked that.
One of the better mods was to change the PI output caps to .05 uF to kill some bass.

It has a 6L6GC power amp with TAD 6L6 STR, classic power supply, high plate, Skyline tone stack,
a switchable bypass cap on CL1 so I can use single coils and humbuckers, the Bright on Clean only relay and GE vintage preamp tubes.
It has 5uF bypass caps on both CL and OD stages.

The cab I play these through is a 1960's Vox 2 x 12 extension cab with two
EV 12 L classics.

I also built a Dumbleator FX loop which really helps the tone of both amps.
I have a TC G Sharp sitting on the D'lator which I use for ambient reverb and delay for just a touch of warmth.
Then I have a pedal board with these going into the input of the amp.
Peterson Strobo Stomp2 tuner, Guyatone WR3 Wah Rocker, BYOC compressor, Hardwire TR-7 tremolo set for rotary, EB Wah pedal

In the loop I have a EB jr. Volume pedal, TC Corona Chorus, EHX Stereo Memory Man delay and the Xotic X-Blender to parallel the TC G Sharp into the loop.

I like playing my dual humbucker Schecter C1-Classic through these amps.
The humbuckers really sound good.

My rig is constantly changing. I mostly play for pleasure or recording, no live gigs for quite a while.

Shown is a 100W HRM on top and a 100W #124 on bottom. Below that is a Sundown and on the right are Mesa Tremoverb and Maverick.

I have not had much building time, the band is taking all my extra time using what I built.
I am in the middle of a SSS-150 that has the purple goop. I have a long way to go on it.
Dam thing weighs around 90 pounds just the chassis. The small stages I play on I don't see much use
for a 150 watt guitar amp. The little green combo is the best sounding ODS amp so far V-1 is my own
creation and V-2 is ODSR #057 value with a EVM12-S speaker.

Thanks to all, Steve.

@67plexi:

that green combo looks very familiar... How do you like the 1x12 combo? I never bonded with the combo version it seemed to lack bass. I sold the cabinet.

Some pics of my amps. The green HRM head was sold some time ago, now I only have the #124 ODS copy (black tolex) and a 70s style Hybrid (brown tolex). The Silver Alligator clone never was finished unfortunately.

The Dumbleator is seldomly used as the ODS amps, nowadays I mainly play through my Vibroverb clone and a DRRI with a pedalboard. I plan on building a SSS based on 002 as a pedal platform.

Some other amps I built many moons ago but seldomly use:

Soldano SLO-100
Mongrel amp: Fender Clean and Marshall OD (hot rodded JCM800) with loop

On the combo cabinets they are all tight grain mahogany plywood no lack of bass.
each combo has a different speaker in it on the green combo I wanted a light weight speaker
but after trying ten different speakers the EVM12-S was the hands down winner.
The Black Flag combo ODS-100 was to bright a vintage Fane Studio 12L solved that issue.
The other #124 combo has a EVM12-L. My humble opinion the EVM12-S is one of the best speakers
ever made for full range. It may be that my PA system has EVM12-S speakers mains and monitors that's
what my ears are accustom to.
