New geetar!!

Post by rfgordon »

It's not everyday ya get a really good deal, so I figured I'd brag a wee bit.

I've been seeing this guitar over at a local store for quite a while now, and played it a few times. Very nice feel and tone, and, like most of the asian Epis, just about flawless workmanship.

The store had it marked way down ($300), so at first I just thought it was a regular Dot with a goofy graphic. Then last week the store owner said that it was "some kind of special edition or something. I had to mark it down cuz I dropped it and chipped the binding." Hmmmm...special edition?

Well, it turns out to be a "Dregen Dot" named for the guitarist in a Swedish band called the Backyard Babies. Who knew? Supposedly, 200 were made back in 2004. I've found used/vintage dealers selling them for anywhere between $900 and $1600, so I figure 3 bills was good--considering it's got Gibson 57 Classic and Classic Plus pups! Those things are a bill each.

I'm actually going to Sweden in a week (Your American tax dollars at work), but that band doesn't have any gigs listed during my visit. Bummer--woulda liked to get the pickguard signed! That might make it more special.

I've been jonesing for a 335 tone for a long time now, which it delivers in spades. I still hate the skull, but it might get lost under a goldtop refinish. No matter how "special" this special edition is, I somehow doubt it'll ever really become "collectable." It's a marvelous axe, but it's still a Korean Epi--no matter that it says Epiphone Custom Shop on the back of the headstock.

So, anyway, that's my cool guitar story of the week.

That thing looks spectacular for what it is! :D

Were you happy with the factory setup or did you have to send it in/tinker with it?

Turn it for near what the dealers are asking and get a real 335. An Heritage H-535. Like mine: $1K

I s'pose I could sell it for a profit...but then I'd just end up building another amp.......

lol.. but if you didn't sell the guitar you'd never ever so much as look at a layout??

It is tough when you find something like that to decide whether to just keep it or turn it around. Got a Great River ME-1NV mic pre (retails over 1000 new) in a pawn shop for 475 last week, perfect condition.. cash or keep... dunno..

At least you really can't lose either way :)

Maybe I should've taken it with me last week on my trip over to Sweden...I wonder what Hellstone Guitars would've given me for it? Hmmmm....next time....

And I never did find that mythical Swedish Bikini Team! Saw lots of candidates, though!
