Tone Ring Cab, Bassman, etc

Post by benoit »

While looking at some sites that sell custom cabs I came across the term tone ring for the first time and did some googling. It piqued my interest and I wanted to know if anyone's had experience with them. Are they worth the extra hassle (if you build) or cash (if you buy)? I want to build a 1x12 for my 20 Watt Bassman, which right now in a really terrible 1x15 closed back combo.

Er... that rambled a bit.. so the main points:

1. What do your ears tell you the tonering does to a cabinet's sound?

2. Speaker reccomendations? I play mostly jazz but would like to be able to get some nice break-up with pedals or whatever.

3. Cab design? I was thinking of building one more or less to match the specs of an avatar 1x12. I work in a cabinet shop and we have some old 3/4" voidless baltic birch lying around that I can have so the only thing I really need to buy is speaker/jack/wiring.

I've gigged quite a bit with a single 12 early 60's bassman tonering cabinet. I currently haven't used it for a while, I've been trying all kinds of combinations in my 2 12's lately. I've been thinking of pulling it out, it's a great sounding cab. It really seems to put out a lot of sound with a single 12, and it will really show you weak points of speakers. I think my favorite speaker in it is an old g 12 h30 that has been reconed several times. The other speaker that sounded good in it was a THD lonestar, which looks to be made by emminence, Andy described it as a cross between a vintage 30 and an oxford. If I start messing with it in the near future I'll post some more thoughts on it. It was my main gigging cabinet for a while when I was using a Hiwatt custom lead 30. I've been using 2 12's with my express and trem-rocket. I have a single 15 tonering cabinet that I've done some surf with, but lately Ive been using a dual showman setup for surf. Phil
