ARrrrg!

Post by Structo »

Well most of you know it rains a lot in Oregon.
It does but usually not all at once.

Yesterday was a gutter buster and the street in front of our house started flooding.
What happens is we have a large drainage ditch behind our back yard.
When the ditch starts to fill up, the streets which drain into the ditch begin backing up when the water level is equal to the ditch....

The water made it half way up the yard to the house before it started subsiding.

To make matters worse, the lights started flickering and finally the power cut out about 3:30pm.
So out come the candles and lanterns.
A few weeks ago I had ordered an emergency radio that has a crank on it, solar cells and rechargeable lithium battery.
That really came in handy.

The power was out about six hours.
I know it doesn't compare to you guys on the east coast dealing with Sandy but we rarely get power outages.
Of course I unplugged all my electronics like, TV's, computers, etc. to avoid any surges or spikes.
I plugged in my computer this morning and it was all screwed up.
Probably because it was on when the power went out.
The system drive got corrupted and a few other things got screwed up.
I had to run chkdsk which took about an hour to complete and
my AV program was fubared as well.

Finally got it working again about an hour ago.

The fun just never stops!

You gotta love "should have" advice, right?

I LOVE my UPS battery back-up devices for my computers. I get several power outs each year, making these units an excellent investment. They prevent surges, brownouts, and failures from affecting my digital stuff, giving me about 30 minutes to send "see you later" emails and power everything down.

I can recommend CyberPower units over APC. Replacement batteries for both brands are easily sourced and DIY.

I feel for you. We're having serious rain here in Seattle too. For those that don't live in the NW, our rainy winters are usually just a grey mist, and rarely a downpour. I think we got two inches yesterday.

The drain got clogged in my driveway and started flooding my garage. I had to tie two hoses together, turn on the water to fill the hoses, and then disconnect one and run it out to the street gutter to syphon water out of my driveway/garage.

Keep dry and hope you don't have any more power outages. My wife grew up on the Oregon coast and still has many friends there. They are also having high winds.

Hope this storm doesn't last too long.

Whoah, just had lightning, sounds like it struck close by. We never get lightning in the NW.

Liar! You just said you got some, then you said you don't. ;)

Flooding used to be every afternoon in summer here until about 10 years ago when they finally fixed the city drainage. I saw several people drive their cars into 5' deep streets over the course of the 10 years before that.

I remeber a couple of years ago we got about 20 inches of rain in a week.It wouldn't have been that bad for me except a bridge over the creek we live by got dammed up and backed up I had a bout a foot of water in my garage/musicroom.It happened in less than an hour too.was able to salvage most everything except for a couple of cabs.

Then there was the icestorm 2008.We only lost power for few days some people were without power for over a month.

Yeah, it's been crazy.

We just had another downpour, some of the heaviest rain I've seen here.

Also what is weird is they usually blame all these crazy storms on El Nino or El Nina but this year they said that we should be free from those effects.

You watch, we'll get a foot of snow in January.

I'd take a foot of snow over an inch of ice anyday.

Unfortunately, when we get one, we end up with the other. It will thaw in the day and freeze at night.

Add to that we don't get enough snow to warrant snow plows, and mix in a lot of clueless drivers, and it's a recipe for disaster.

Seattle is also hilly, like San Francisco.

That was funny I like how everyone keeps the brakes locked up while they're sliding.

Its very hilly here to.Small mountains even

We get a lot of ice here.I've seen 6 or 7 inches on the ground and stay below freezing for couple weeks. You could ice skate everywhere you go.That much ice tkes a long time to melt even if its above 50.Most of the time winters are pretty mild here though we do get some sub zero temps everyonce in a while.

Tom, I'm beginning to think the weather in the NW somehow affects TAG. What a shitstorm we had today.
