Express Clone "Tarryn" demo

Post by shaunf »

Hey guys,

Thanks again for all the support while I was busy with my build a few weeks ago. Here is a quick and dirty clip of my amp recorded in GarageBand on my iPad. Settings were vol 5, bass 6, middle, 6, treble 6, presence 5, bright switch on 100pf cap, VVR on about 1/3 power, playing into an ordinary Marshall 1960 cab with g12t75 speakers. Guitar is my stock '59 reissue Les Paul.

Congratulations! Thank you for the clip it sounds good. I'm most Impressed with the wave form how even when soloing or accenting notes it's compressed almost flat. Was that a function on GarageBand, uploading to soundcloud, or the amp?

Thanks. To be honest, I have no idea. I just recorded it with no effects or processing and uploaded it straight from the app onto soundcloud. Although looking at it it now back in the app, it looks pretty flat in GarageBand too.

First, congrats! That is a great sound and really happy playing! I envy that cleanup sound bigtime!

When I record to my ipad it does the same compression thing, like a decent stereo recording from a video camera. It doesn't like super loud, but gets away with really loud.

Good amp!

Congrats Shaunf. The demo really shows the dynamics not only of the amp you built but your ability as a guitarist as well.

I love it!

The cleans are heavenly ... the overdrive is wonderful ... and the back and forth clean - dirty - clean - dirty :D

Thanks for the comments guys. Can't take credit for the playing. That was done by a friend of mine who came over to visit and try the amp.

Here he is again, this time on his custom built Strat type single coil guitar

Great job dude! You can always tell a TW by that distinctive clean tone. Very delicate and bell like. Bet it just rips when you're in the room with it.

Congratulations Shaun.
She sounds great!
Very clear & articulate.
No place to hide any mistakes or sloppy play with her.
Nice noodling too.
Well Done Sir !

I would say that Novella song has a lot of processing in the studio.

Instead of critisizing Shauns with negativity and insulting everyone by the "how old are you guys", how about some constructive criticism about how he could make a better recording?

Shaun simply recorded his amp with a cell phone.

I think it sounds good and most likely would sound great in a mix.

No shit man. Garlin, I've never bad mouthed anyone on this forum and while I give you the nod for your Dumblized Twin, you can sure come across as a condescending dick some times. Almost every time you post, there is always some little dig buried in your subtext.

Most of us play music and build amps for the love it. Not to impress anyone but just to live in the joy of the moment when high volume and singing tone collide in your brain. Sharing that with friends is even better. Tone is in the ear of the beholder and beer holder. And please don't separate me from you because you might think I can't grasp all manner of subtlety because I'm not a professional or I'm younger than you.

Sure ShaunF's recording might not convey the "real" sound but that does not mean that his amp does not sound like a Trainwreck. We all know that. There are compression artifacts and his recording is crude at best. So what? I know what to listen for so I can pick out what is happening in the room where he is playing and what the amp is doing.

This is a community where we celebrate success and help others avert or correct mistakes. We all learn and grow through this process. Glen Kuykendall is THE Trainwreck player so I benchmark the TW sound by his videos and playing, not processed studio cuts. Glen is always the most non-pretentious dude, generous with his time, experience, and knowledge, even with a novice player/builder. Now that's the mark of a professional.
