Just yesterday I finished a cool little clone of my '54 Silvertone 1331 using all 7-pin tubes (6AU6, 6AQ5 and.....well, I used a 5Y3 because the tiny transformer had a tap for this and it looked cool!) and will be building another even smaller version with a 6"X4"x2" chassis for one of my friends (should be finished by this weekend). I have another 6x4x2 chassis that I just pulled the guts out of (was a high gain Champ using a 6BM8 and 12AX7) and will probably build up a normal Champ point to point in this. I'll make sure to post a lot of pics of these soon, maybe I can start a trend with these fun little buggers
Also as stated in the title I did complete that quad KT120 monster that was built in a Fender PA100 head. Usually I wouldn't gut a vintage Fender but this one had been both mutilated (i.e. nothing was original on the boards) and required a complete rebuild anyways (power stage sockets and resistors were crumbling!). This amp got an Antek toroid 400-0-400 @1A (6.3V @ 10A!!) and the second to biggest OT that Hammond makes. I also incorporated the series/parallel effects loop and preamp output that Merlin presented in his book. I usually don't use these (effects loops) in my builds but it was requested and I had six preamp sockets to fill...so...that happened. That damned amp is a monster. It'll put the fear of god in you through even a small 2x10 bass cab. Through the super fancy 4x10 boxes that were created for this amp by the owner, it'll start shaking the fillings in yer teeth. The only that that worries me is that this amp gets HOT. Those KT120's definitely cook after about 20 minutes of abuse. We are going to put a nice fat fan somewhere in the amp to try to cool it some.. Hopefully that prevents the amp from melting. Damn Fender and their up-side-down chassis mounting schemes!
I've also got some old PA heads (been collecting these like candy!) that I'm sure I'll eventually convert into guitar amps. I just found out that Jack White is touring with the same RCA PA head that I just traded for (although I don't know what circuit he has in these). I've also got a Bogen Challenger that I picked up on Tuesday and an old (mid 40's?) Masco PA head with 6 different pieces of iron, three 5Y3's in parallel and 807's in the output stage. The Bogen and the Masco are surely getting rebuilt, I'm up in the air on the RCA tube head. If the Jack White connection makes it worth as much as the POS Silvertone amps he uses, I'll just sell it..
Last (but not least) I have two guitar projects going. One is the $100 paulownia Strat kit from GFS and I recently also bought a finished Tele body (same wood, cherry sunburst finish) and some pickups from GFS as well as a neck and hardware from EY Guitar that will become the second guitar. The Strat kit is currently getting a natural finish (the guy I built the KT120 amp for is helping me with this, he's a wood whiz) and I'm waiting on all of the parts for the Tele, but I'll post some pics when I'm done with them both. I was happy enough with the quality of the Strat kit (minus the hardware, of which I have better stuff here anyways) to justify buying the Tele parts. I don't feel too guilty, the Strat was to celebrate my successful MSEE defense and the Tele was to celebrate getting my thesis approved and signed off on. Why work so hard for very little pay if I can't spend 1/10th of what I make in a year from grad school on some toys?
Sorry for the long winded post. I've been having fun, just in super secret mode. I'll start threads for these projects as they come to completion. I've also got a couple of sets of blackface iron, xfrms for a 100W Marshall and also for both a Rocket and an Express build. Now that grad school is done, I suspect many more impromptu amp builds in my near future..
