Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
Hello, I know this is supposed to be about tube amps, but I am hoping this is something I could get help with. I picked up an old case, and I think it is a Fender. It has the old case smell and Cheney latches and I am confident it is legitimately vintage. It looks like the logo-less cases of 1964-65. The only thing that is weird is the positioning of the "box". I have found many pics of Fenders in vintage cases (strats, teles, jags, mustangs, duo-sonics) just like this, but the "box" or pocket is never in this location. I would really appreciate some help trying to find some info on this. I put my Fernandes LE-2 so you could see how a "strat" fits in here. Is this a Fender case? If so, which guitar? Maybe the same case builder made this?

Re: Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
Some times you can figure it out by looking at the impression left on the top inside . Maybe something rare like a Marauder .
Re: Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
Thanks for the reply. The case looked like it had held a Fender based on the impressions. They were there before I put that Fernandes in there. I have looked at many photos of Fender guitars from this era, but I have not seen a case quite like this one.

Re: Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
Not a Fender. Padding is wrong, lining is wrong, length is wrong, pickbox is wrong. I can tell better by handles and master latch, but it looks more like an '80s/90's era, one clue is the density of the knap in the rolls on the lining. It looks like a toupe', not uniformly dense. heh
Re: Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
Thank you for your reply. It may not be a Fender, but it uses the same Cheney latches that the original vintage ones used. This is not from the 80s or 90s. The interior is exactly the same as a Fender bass case I had from 64-65. That smell and look cannot be duplicated. They made many different cases in this era of different sizes. Here are some closeups that might help. The lining is not long shag plush. It is short velvet type material. Based on this website, http://home.provide.net/~cfh/fender2.html#jaguar , it seems a lot like the cases from 64-65. Was Fender making their own cases? They were certainly more than capable.

P.S., my camera does not accurately show what the lining looks like. It looks different in person than in these pics. I know that doesn't really help, but....

Re: Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
Much better. It is a Fender case.
What I was afraid to say based on the early pictures is that some lefty cases were built with the latches on the right-hand side.
It is still a little long for a strat or tele case. I have an idea or two.

Re: Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
Ok, I looked again. I am going to guess it's a late '65 electric 12 case.
Re: Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
Thanks Reel, I appreciate your help. I am pretty convinced it is a Fender, and your input makes me feel better about it. I had never considered that a lefty case might be different. The only thing that bothers me is that even the electric XII case I have seen had the pickbox in a different place. But maybe if it is a lefty? I never thought to give the dimensions earlier, it is 43" x 14.5 "

Re: Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
The lefty cases are supposed to open the same but the box is in the right ->> end of the case. There were a few bunkups where a confused worker put the hardware for the outside on swapped edges.
Rarely did they make a lefty case. The frequency makes me think they could never make up their minds why to do it, if to do it, or how to do it. No thrift in two styles if you only need one.
When I finally get amp pics for a couple others here I will try to get pocturesmof one of my own lefty cases with a little confusion built in. I believe it also has no logo.

Re: Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
If I recall the early logo plates fell off most of the old cases due to the way it was fastened to the case.
It still looks like a decent vintage case.
I have a 63 Jag and hard case.
It was white tolex when I got it in 73.
Like a dumb kid I painted it black.......
On the locks the slider button is towards the ends of the case on each lock.
with the flip up latch in the middle.
Like this: o ll ___ll____ll o
What is strange about your case is that the accessory box is on the upper half.
Oh yeah, my case smells like mildew....

Re: Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
Thank you Structo, the accessory box being in that odd location is the thing that confuses. Did Fender make their own cases? Could they have made a generic case? I mentioned the case size in an earlier post, does anyone know if that determines anything? I really appreciate all the help so far, but I would love to find out what this went to for sure. Would still love any help.

It could easily take a bass.
Tom, that black comes off perfectly. Let me see if I can find the name of the crap that doesn't eat tolex.

Re: Looking for help identifying a vintage Fender case
I thought you were kidding until I googled it.
The MSDS says it contains acetone.
I wonder if that will melt the tolex.
I think the reason I painted it in the first place was because it was all scuffed up, lol
The guitar was sunburt that was pretty beat.
Like a dumb kid in the 70's when natural wood finish guitars were the rage, I stripped it and stained and clear coated.
I've been threatening to refinish it back to sunburst for years.......
