Hurricaine Sandy - Getting Hammered

I'm here in Baltimore. We are on the SW of the storm. Forecast is 24 hours of hard rain. Expecting more than 2". Winds are starting to pick up, with The Weather Channel reporting 25-33MPH gusts, but they look worse through all the heavy rain. Nothing going sideways just yet. I confess this is anxiety provoking after Irene sent a tree through my bedroom ceiling last year. It is probably a foregone conclusion that power lines fall and power will be lost.

I've got a sister in LI NY (North shore) who says not much rain falling at the moment but heavy winds in the 60 MPH range.

So, how are you guys doing?

Seems like a lot of people are ignoring the warnings.

The satellite views of the storm are amazing!

That is a huge storm and to have it meet up with the cold front is going to be devastating.

Western CT: not much rain yet, but gusty wind. Not as bad as LI. We may get lucky and miss the edge of the 59kt sustained zone. The storm surge is the scariest thing, but we're pretty far inland. I really feel for the folks near the shore or along rivers that flow to the ocean.

I'm in NE NC on the VA border, we've had constant precip for the last 2 days, but surprising the total amount of rain has been less than some Nor'easters. Other than some tidal flooding locally, the area made out pretty well. The replica ship HMS Bounty did sink off the coast of Hatteras attempting to out run the storm.

I'm in Middletown, NJ a couple miles from the coast. Power went out a little while ago (7:30pm). I have a generator so we're good as long as a tree doesn't fall on the house. Lots of mandatory evacuations closer to the shore.

I'm in York Haven, PA, about 40 miles north of Baltimore. It's 8:30 pm on Monday. The storm has been nowhere near as bad as the forecast. We've had winds in the 20 to 30 mph range most of the day, although, right now the winds are in the high 30's. The highest gust at the Harrisburg International Airport was 52 mph so far, nowhere near the 70 MPH+ in the forecast. Lots of rain. I didn't see any trees down around the neighborhood. Most importantly, the power and cable TV has not gone out at all. Most of the weather forecasts have the storm starting to wind down around 2 AM Tuesday.

This storm has not been as bad as last year's Halloween snow storm where we had massive power outages.

I haven't had power since 3pm. Lost a huge tree in the back yard. Its been pouring for hours and the wind its incredible. Got a tiny bit of water in the basement. Things should be fine by tomorrow. Last year we had a blizzard in October that left most of Mass without power for a long time

My mother and several siblings live on Cape Cod. Talked to them a couple of times today. Although some have lost power on the Cape, they have not. Gust reported above 80 in Wellfleet (where they live) but no tidal surge to speak of... yet. And moderate rain... so far.
Bummer about the Bounty, and especially the loss of two crew members.

Storm has passed.

Not much rain, more like high speed damp wind.

Lost one leg of power only so I'm very lucky.

All trains and busses suspended, most bridges and tunnels still closed.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get to work and see how things are.

Still no power here in Jersey. Shut the generator down at 11pm last night. Got up this morning to start it back up at 7am. It ran for about 2 mins and shut down. No spark. I was hoping for bad gas and a fouled plug but after cleaning the plug and draining the gas.....no luck. I removed the engine cover to get a look at the magneto. Reset a few connections but didn't find anything obviously wrong. Put it back together and it's been running for over an hour without a hiccup.
