anyone with 7591 experience?

Post by Icetech »

Hi guys, havn't played with amps in a couple of years, but with winter coming i need a hobby.. soo i decided to pull out some older items and check them over..

I had someone give me a mid 60's epiphone zephyr ea15-rvt (i think), its basically a gibson ga25-rvt with 7591's Basically when you fire it up it runs ok for about 30 seconds then gets a lightning storm in one power tube, i was just checking voltages, the schematic called for 394 im at 388.. no issue there.

But my question is, i have never had a 7591 amp before but have read that they are pretty amazing tubes.. the ones in this amp though get unbelievably hot, i touched one after about a minute and burned my finger, much hotter than my 6v6/6l6 amps. Do 7591's run very hot?

And having not heard a good 7591 amp, should i find a new pair of 7591's or just swap to 6v6's?

Thanks for the input

P.S. anyone know of a decent new 7591? can't bring myself to spend $100 for 2 used ones

JJ 7591 tubes perform great and come in at around $40 a pair shipped to your door.

Good tube for vibration free environment. Just don't use them in a combo. Rattle and lightning show will come soon enough, sometimes after just a couple hours. IMO $100 for a pair of used ones in good condition is a safer and in the end a cheaper bet.
My experience with JJ 7591S since 2006.

Snap these up while you still can. http://www.qsl.net/kb7rgg/radio/humor/7591.html

Here's a guy who caters to the audiophile crowd. He's not a stranger to guitar amps. I've bought from him in the past. Nice guy. Honest dealer. http://www.mcshanedesign.net/tubes.htm Maybe you should look at the EH tube.

All My tubes have silver soot on them blocking the glassI wonder if my amps will sound better if I take the glass off the tubes and clean them.

Hi,

The 6V6, is not a direct substitution for a 7591, electrically. The 7868 and another tube, the 6GM5 are electrically the same if you are thinking of re-wiring or purchasing adapters (Antique Radio Supply had them for the 6GM5) or to would have to re-wire the sockets. The new production 7868 by EH so far as I know is a good tube.

http://www.vacuumtubesinc.com/TubeTidbi ... e7591.aspx
(the information on the Noval tube sockets is incorrect, the sockets are different sizes).

New production: EH has a coin based version, which does a reasonably good job, but the darn tube is too tall for many applications (such as The Fisher Stereo Integrated Amps). This is an improvement over their former offering, a 6L6 repinned to fit a 7591, the 7591XYZ

The forums and tests I've read on the JJ version of the 7591 stated the early versions did not reach the 25 Watts of the tube. More like 14 watts
Fortunately, I have a Stash of NOS tubes for my Stereo Integrated Amp. Wonderful sound.

Best Regards,

Steve

Thanks guys.. i will grab a pair of inexpensive newer ones for now and see how it works.. this amp is reallly insane on how its built, and a nightmare to do anything in, would rather avoid modding if i dont have to:)
