Preamp section and power section
is it possible to mix and match preamp sections and power sections, ie use the power section and PI off say RJ's rockster and marry it up to the preamp section off a express or maybe a fender bassman etc, basically what i,m attempting to do is mix and match on a test bed before building a complete amp
Re: Preamp section and power section
Yes. Preamps are voltage gain sections; power amps are power gain sections. Mix anything you want.

Cheers, i was pretty sure there would'nt be a problem, next stop a express pre into cathode biased 6l6 power sectionFirestorm wrote:Yes. Preamps are voltage gain sections; power amps are power gain sections. Mix anything you want.

You want to be a little careful. Don't push the grid signal so hard it drives the grids negative wrt the cathodes. The tubes want to go AB2. Sounds funny unless you design for it.jestaudio wrote:Cheers, i was pretty sure there would'nt be a problem, next,, stop a express pre into cathode biased 6l6 power sectionFirestorm wrote:Yes. And if you don't understand what Firestorm is saying here then you probably shouldn't mix and match. Not to say it's rocket science mind you, just that different power tubes have different drive requirements.Firestorm wrote:You want to be a little careful. Re: Preamp section and power section
hence the reason for using RJ's rockster power section, gives me a chance to try out tubes you would,nt normally use in a express buildskyboltone wrote:And if you don't understand what Firestorm is saying here then you probably shouldn't mix and match. Did you mean 'grids POSITIVE wrt the cathode? You want to be a little careful. Don't push the grid signal so hard it drives the grids negative wrt the cathodes
Assume you were refering to the power tube grids.
