PPIMV and cut in rocket, can u have both?

Post by johndandry »

I want to wire up one of the PPIMV controls in my build. how does that work with the cut control?

I have both a PPIMV and a cut in my Express. They work well together, and interestingly the cut control will bring back the tone when the PPIMV is turned down.

Agreed, the presence control is practically useless in this regard as are the tone controls when the master is dialled back. The cut control performs admirably.

What version of the PPIMV are you guys doing. I have a 500k dual pot.
I attached the version I am thinking about. Would the cut go after the dual pot before the 1 caps in this schematic or after the 1uf caps next to the 220ks?

use the larmar, not that one from o'connor. the larmar is safer and out of the circuit when on 10. and it works with cut and tremolo

so with the Larmar, do I just wire the cut control on the master out and grid resistor junction?
Also can you put a 100pf fizz cap on the rocket?
Thanks

I have my cut between the PI coupling caps and the MV pots, as it would normally go before the bias feed resistors.

I have four cathode biased amps (2 with EL34s, 2 with EL84s) with both the LarMar PPIMV and a cut control. Works really well. Part of it is that none of these amps have negative feedback around the PI. The reason why the 59 Bassman/Plexi presence control does not work well with a PPIMV is that it relies on the negative feedback which in turn relies on the signal coming from the PI output. Once you reduce that signal with the PPIMV the feedback loop collapses at some point. That is why Larry (aka novosibir) recommended to change the presence control to a cut control and to bypass the feedback shunt resistor with a cap, which decouples the negative feedback loop at high frequencies (same thing a presence control would do). Use the cut control to darken your tone.

Cheers Stephan
