Bastard Baby Bluesmaster

Post by stelligan »

I guess I just can't stop. You gotta keep going until you get it right I guess? This sprouted up from a board I had populated for a 100 watt Bluesmaster. When all the 183 & 102 info came crashing in I opted to go that route with a new preamp board and that amp ended up with vibratoking(I am hoping he tweaked that build to his liking).

So, that board has been staring at me - waiting for a home....

Magnetic Components 40-18041 Power Transformer(*vibrolux), 40-18001 OT(50/60w), in a D'Lite chassis.

To do:
finish wiring the PAB relay(can't find another 22meg resistor in my pile)
wire the footswitch jack and manual switches
solder V2 heaters
wire the power socket.
cross fingers........

Questions for you all and opinions: Should I opt for a different presence cap? Should I buy a choke? I have 500 ohm cement resistor there now(have a 5W 390 in the parts drawer). All I had for V1 was a 1/2 watt 220k - OK? Do I need a FET sim resistor to ground at B+5?

It looks like I have a small parts order in my future anyway so, any suggestions on component composition would be greatly appreciated. As would Mouser part #s

Thanks Tony, mdroberts, Ultra Hooked and all involved for the layout in the files section. Power up soon...

Looks great stelligan
nice use of the cloth wire.
I'm working on a similar dlite rebuild. Will be interested in what you think
of this circuit.
I have opted for a choke, using the original BN PT (going to try EL34's) and a MC 50watt Marshall PT. Will you be using 6l6's?

Not sure but it looks like you have a 150k FET sim at the top of the PS board?
As far as components I say use what you have and experiment as you go.
I think the 1/2 watts are fine, but if your doing a mouser order anyway( 1 watts) try a few different brands, KOA,IRC maybe some old nos if you can. Some links to a few that others have suggested.

Just my opinion. May the power up and tone gods be on your side...

Darin,

Thanks for checking out the build. This will be a 6L6 amp - and I misspoke. I used Vibrolux type PT to fit in that chassis hole. Thanks so much for the links. I was looking at those KOA Speer resistors from another thread but, I guess I am anal retentive about the 1/2 watt vs. 1 watt thing. Silly. Does anyone have a link to 1 watter? Or do they not exist? I will most likely power up and see what I have here rather than fester over what might be. Plenty of festering to do in the tweaking stage.

Good luck with your build! I should really have an EL34 rawk amp...........

Go for the choke

The 220k is fine (signal)..The presence cap is a taste thing try both 1uf and 2.2uf if you have them (2.2 is a little sweeter)
Yes on the 150k (gives a different feel to low end)

Build looks good and you are most Welcome..

Good Luck with it!!

An easy place to put it is between the V5 plates junction and the ground spot on the terminal strip at V1..

Thanks! In addition to the 150k at top of PS board right?
Also - sticking with Mag. Components - anyone recommend this choke? http://www.classictone.net/40-18003.html
Or other?

Thanks all.

Not sure what you mean? The 150k sim resistor is there if you don't have a Fet set up in the amp.. It effects the RC constant on V1 plate supply..If you have a FET in the amp the 150k is already there and no need for the sim resistor.. Does this answer your question?

I guess I was wondering if the D'Lite style power supply had taken this into account already with that horizontal resistor at top right to ground. I'm a piker.

One more thing for the parts order and another delay in gratification. Thanks!

Yep! :D ( imo 3w is overkill)

NO SMOKE!!

Post by stelligan »

Power up today went great with no issues(I lied - 100k resistor on the HRM board instead of 100 ohm - oops). I love the mid boost on this amp - the mega boost as wired really lives up to it's name. I may have to tame that a tad. Voltages are:
V1a 182
V1b 188
V2a 208
V2b 210
V3a 256
V3b 250

B+3 409
B+4 333
B+5 298

Here is a quick sound test of the amp with OD entrance and HRM trimmers set by ear. After the clip I measured them@ bass 66k, Mid 6k, Treb 79k. A bit bright right now. OD trim was at 38k in clip - gonna adjust that down. JJ ecc83s in V1 & 2, Mullard reissue in V3, Winged C 6L6 power tubes, 2 x 12 open back with G1265 and a little reverb added after.

Yippee! Let the tweaking begin. Thanks again to everyone for the help - the choke was a winner. I tried it with the resistor first and it was not pleasant.
