I don't know about you guys but I have never had anyone but other amp builders ask me what caps are in my amps? Players ask about tubes but never about transformers or capacitors.

I prefer Mojotone Dijon, Xicon Film caps, M150's and the various OD 6PS, 715 & 716. When my OD supply runs out I'll just stick to the other three types.

Maybe the players aren't superstitious enough. We need to educate them.

:)

At this point, I use them for looks more than tone.

Spague 716's or Mallory 150's - depends on the mood I'm in.
I bought a bunch of cheap lookalikes - haven't talked myself into trying them yet.
Macallan's Scotch used to be my favorite amber nectar.
My favorite French table wine was Courvoisier.
Only an occasional beer drinker now. Hangovers get worse with age.

mustards are way too expensive now, at least 22nf and .68u are. Its nice to have some options. I prefer the sozos to the TAD/Mojo caps since the sozos sound much more like a real mustard.

Wife and I have not been drinking in many months. Bad news is, I still feel hungover every freakin' morning. Why bother?

This is the Garage Talk forum, right?

I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning that's as good as they're going to feel all day.

BIG Hendrick's fan here - recently discovered something called Old Tom's Gin - never saw brown gin before.

Mix up some Old Tom's, a dash of Celery Bitters and some Soda.
Splits the difference between Hendrick's and Pusser's Rum (big fan of this as well - Rum you want to taste)

If you want to talk rum, Navy Blue is the only rum worth having

Hi,

I hear that Vintage NOS Whiskey and Cognac is better than new production.

Other people tell me its just voodoo hooch, and that Alcohol is chemically the same whether its new or old, so don't waste your money.

I htink I can thell da diffrence aftr mutliple blind (well I wasn't blind when I started) A-B testing, with fiends.  :?

Blest Reegawrds,

ST eve

PS I've use Sozo standards, yet to use the upgrade, I have yet to try the Blue Molded to compare to Jupiters line, and I have a stash of Mullard Mustards. I used the tropical fish mullards, Russian Paper in Oil, Polystyrene, Russian Wax Paper and Foil (a favorite with some guitar builders) and have found a US company locally that still makes Wax Paper and foil (yet to contact or try). I have a friend who swears by the green "Chiclets" caps.

Speakers make the biggest difference, then tubes, then caps and resistors, wire dress, and finally wire. IMHO. However, I do use larger values on the screens, so things such as teflon wires, etc would have less influence as to making an amp too bright.

Only complaint about Sozo, the Royal Blue E-caps, have been out of stock longer than 16 months (I ran out of toes to count on), and sometimes you have to wait on an order to ship. This is okay for hobbyist builders, but I wouldn't want to go into full scale production (to be so lucky) and have to worry about production run times.

i tried the sozo standards.... never got to the "hand wound" ones.. the standards didn't sounds like real mustards to me.. they sounded very similar to M150's, IC, and mojo dijon's though... they aren't bad caps but they aren't like real mustards either IMHO. i usually end up liking the sound of the other caps a tiny bit better when i've tried them

I compared the the Sozo standards, Mallory 150 and 715P. The Sozo and 150s were really close, the Orange Drops where more bight and brittle.
I've not built another amp with Orange Drops after doing the test.

Although not part of my test, I recently completed at AC 30/4 style amp using Mojo Vitamin T's (Oil Filled) through out and it sounds great.

Using Colossal's martini recipe, I found no difference between the 150s and the Sozos, but the Orange Drop did add a nice crunch. It's a little hard for me to be very scientific about the results, it sorta all ran together after extensive "testing". I want to try it again with an extra virgin olive (or 2), but...about that "extra virgin" thing, how do they really know what goes in there before they put the pimento in?

Note 715P are polypropylene dielectric. The PS and 225P are polyester (Mylar) film/foil, and are preferred by some. There is a new number for the PS series 418P (same part). See: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... range+drop Mallory 150's are widely reported to be very close to the Phillips/Mullard "Mustard" caps, and they are both polyester (Mylar) film dielectric.

Is there a pattern here?
