Looks pretty darn good to me man. Nice work. Though I did get certified on all the shop equipment in high school, I haven't attempted any precision joinery since then. First dovetails, ever. Not perfect.

When you round over the corners it will totally change your opinion on how poorly you've done. It will be fine, and better, and better. Looks like good work from here.
I don't like visible joints, so dovetails always look icky to me! You guys drive me crazy with it. My obsessive nature doesn't allow me to like dovetails! Oh, I have a funny link I will post later on that subject. Will be a good giggle.

That's so funny. Dovetails, to me, always looked like the tools I didn't have, and so were a desirable ornament!Reeltarded wrote:I don't like visible joints, so dovetails always look icky to me!
Re: NSD - New shop day!!
As suggested, dovetails shape right up with sanding. Looking nice. WAY not professional…but nice.

Great looking Xtian - now for the ocd part - sand, coat, sand, coat, sand, coat.
When it's finished the grain pops right out.
Looks professional to me.
Wish I had woodworking skills.

Local HW stores do not have Tru Oil. I bought Tung Oil instead. OK to use?

Re: NSD - New shop day!!
Tung Oil is very good - I used to use it.
Gives a nice finish.
In case you didn't see it, search mineral spirits on here. there's a good thread about using it first to pop the figuring in the wood.
It takes a while to harden, which is a pain for someone as patient as me...
Tru oil is gun stock oil - anywhere that sells guns should stock it.
Have fun,
Bob

I think I just decided my next Bruise Maker rebuild will be in a western knotty headbox with buckskin piping and a wood burned Marshall branded logo in amber shellac with a horse hide handle. Saddle Up!
I love that box.

I like tung oil a lot! You should throw some gloss lacquer over it one the oil dries...gives it some nice shine and adds some protection. Even min wax spray lacquer works great and its cheap

Usually you can find Tru Oil at any store that carries gun cleaning supplies.
Of you can order it online.
One of the reasons I like it is because it dries fast and can be recoated in an hour or two.
And, no need to top coat it with anything.

Dovetails on soft wood, once you glue it and there is any gap, rub a little glue in the gap and sand it while still wet.
The sawdust and glue will fill any gap with the correct color.
Use a glue that takes stain.

Great advice. I'm working maple next. Which glue do you like?

Elmers Woodglue Max.
I use that for everything but oily woods(cocobolo, etc) I use epoxy for Cocobolo.
