Question about RIPPER stages

Post by richon »

Does the RIPPER have a jcm800-like third and fourth stage ?

I mean, third stage: 100k plate resistor, 820R cathode
Fourth stage: cathode follower with 100k cathode info a classic jcm800 eq?

Does a 500k pot before those stages work as a GAIN pot for this Overdrive Channel?

So, you're talking about something maybe similar to this?

exactly like this

I have some questions about it:

should I use a RC filter before the 500K GAIN pot (250K in your schematic) to avoid too much bass into the distorting third stage?

What would be a good value of Hz to cut bass??? (470K/470pf marshall like)?

I plan on using a EQ for the OD channel with trimmers inside the chassis (in the PCB) YES OR NO???

I will look forward to seeing what you have in the way of a schematic.

IF, I we're going to try and build an amp to capture the LC-Ripper tone, I would be very tempted to use this 5879 & CF OD gain stage. It's got a really warm fat tone to it. I've used this 5879 OD a few times and really like it.

I added an editable SCH version.

So here we go with the RIPPER Again..
IMO one of Dumbles worst sounding Overdrive amplifiers..(in OD)
From what I hear Larry hardly ever used the OD in his amp..However the clean channel on it is known to be spectacular sounding and blooms into feedback effortlessly.. 8)

When I heard him play in Vegas several years back he used the OD on 1 song with P90's..The tone for me was ahhh

IMO..The amp works best by lifting the clean stack (hard) when you go to OD and set the HRM stack with it lifted!!..Mo like a Marshall then

Good Luck

I have been looking at this circuit but some potentially dumb questions. Isn't the OD of the ripper on Larry's amp the Megaplex? Is that what you mean you don't like the Megaplex, or something different?
Do you have any youtube links to what might be representative of the OD sound you don't care for? Thanks in advance.

IC
There was some discussion on the Ripper years back when a picture of the inside of LC's amp was taken by some tech in Florida (I believe) Shortly thereafter a so called schematic of the Ripper surfaced (don't ask it's all in here!!!...SEARCH) I eventually did build the amp as per the schematic..The results were not I would consider to my liking!!.. I ended up tweaking that circuit (removing the cathode follower and several other tweaks) and came up with this amp..

Several others I talked to who built the circuit had the same opinion on the Ripper..I don't have any clips or know of any to post..I just remember it being a real finicky design..When I heard Larry's at the show the best way to describe it would be real distorted kind of flabby and a bit brash..NOT smooth type we all associate with a D-style amp..I had the same issues Best way to put it.. :?

Others might dig it!

from the link referenced..........

Would a pentode adequately replace two triodes in this, eg 5879? I like 5879s, this does not necessarily have to be a "Dumble-y" solution.
Talbany
That's a great question Idea Off the top of my head I would say sure or at least worth the try.. If it does work out I imagine it would give you a nice Stratty Voxxy top end..It would sure cut through the mix.. This has been something I've wanted to try but never got around to protoing it.. trying and talking about stuff like this is sooo much fun..Good Luck!!
Tony, just curious .......... did you ever get around to trying the 5879 in an OD? If so, did you like it?

Thanks for the info Tony.
What I was thinking is my interpretation of the LC amp guts picture is a little different from what I had seen posted here and in other threads. That has lead me to think the design could benefit from another interpretation.

Blv at ONE point i HAD that on clean, ridiculous OD w/just two stages, one trick pony, but oh what a TRICK!!
