500pf caps

Post by surfsup »

With jupiter, sozo, vitaminT, 716p, etc, i see they go down to 1000pf, but not smaller. Are mica, ceramic and polystyrene the only option for smaller values?

What do you guys use for the 500pf first cc on the rocket, for example?

Thanks guys. Gaz, I see you mention class1, and I now know what class 1,2,3 are thanks to you, but the link to Murata data sheet doesn't state anything about the class of this cap. How do you know it is class 1, and not a class 2 cap?

EDIT: Going to do a fresh lookup in Mouser, and selecting class1 from the list, Murata doesn't seem to offer any caps. I don't think this is a class1 cap. Not sure if that even matters aside from value drifting with temp anyway.

Try to remember that some of the best amps were built by Fender using the lowest cost parts he could find. What I'm saying is there is no need to over think the parts quality. There are many things that make a good amp great and I'm not sure there is real clarity on this point.

If you want to shop at Mouser, I highly recommend getting the paper catalog. I less than 2 minutes, I have the following part numbers for 470p radial lead film foil polproylene high voltage caps:
505-FKP1470/1600/5
505-FKP1470/2000/10
505-FKP1470/6000/5
These may be PC mount. I've used such before by simply sistering some leads onto the little stubs they give you.

I think I own an apology for the link I provided above as it is probably a chip cap. Sorry.

I like the vintage "domino" mica caps, if you can find them.

Fender did use the cheapest parts available, but mica makes a huge improvement in a few areas - bright switch, the 10p-3M3 divider, and the 250p in the tone stack. I think mica really smooths out the high frequencies and gives an amp a great character.

The new production dipped mica caps offer some improvement, but are not quite as silky as the vintage ones
