Neutrik Timbre Tone in loop?

Any one familiar with these? Seems like a quick way to adjust highs with a cable in active or passive loop.

Yeah I was wondering about those things too.

I wonder if it is a variable capacitor in there.

Given the expense of a variable cap and the fact that it is a 4 postion switch, I'd guess it is 3 separate caps. I can hear it now...I love my Neutrik thingambob, but I replaced the caps with Sozos and 100 hours later it is SOOOO much better now. :P

Seems silly for someone with a tone knob on their guitar, but I thought it may have utility for those futzing with capacitance in their passive loops or cutting loop cables to varying lengths. Might be cooler if it were infinitely variable. I know we'd all rather open our amp up for the 100th time and solder a network in there.

Just food for thought.

I'm so glad I hadn't taken a sip of something before I read that, otherwise it would be all over my screen.

I haven't tried one of the Neutrik things, but I do have one of these in my Strat:

http://www.villex.com/prtb.html

It actually works really well. I'm not sure if it's got a mini transformer or inductor in there or what to perform the mid boost, but it sounds very natural and almost simulates the effect of adding more windings to the pickups. Tom Anderson uses a version of it in their guitars too.

Along the same type of thing is the mid range shaper from Andy Rothstein.

I had one in a strat and liked it quite a bit.
Not sure why I took it out but he has a few passive type controls that work well and best of all, they don't cost an arm and a leg.

Of course you can't really boost anything if it is indeed passive but you know marketing.

I don't know how the Villex actually accomplishes what it does but it really does make the the guitar sound like you switched to from a Strat single coil to a louder humbucker or P90 when you engage it. I'm guessing it somehow uses a transformer to reduce the highs and boost the mids and lows. Maybe it somehow takes the energy from the high frequencies and uses it to boost the lower frequencies. That's what it kind of sounds like anyway.

Sounds like a change in input impedance.

Usually guitar amps have 1M input impedance, which gives a bright sound out of passive pickups. Lowering that value to eg. 100k will change the sound of the guitar to a darker sound with the same level.....works much better than a tone pot/cap, which dampen the higer frequencies and thus reduces the energy.

A tone control on the cable is a Great idea for a cable-into-the-loop-when-no-dumblelator-is-used.

Much easier that soldering caps to the jack sockets AND you can adjust the highend to compensate for a 67p on the mastervolume if run at lower volumes.

Like the compensation box Greg (Boldaslove69) uses, only with simpler. Just a cable - no box.

If you look at the downloads on the Neutrik site for this plug, there are assy instructions on pdf. I bet it is a 3 position rotary switch with
smt caps inside...
