Gain stage

ok folks, adding a gain stage using half a triode seems pretty easy using a 1 meg pot to control the gain however , and please correct me if i,m wrong, adding the stage directly after the input and cascading both halves of a 12ax7 would also give me a pretty big volume increase when switched in, would i get the same effect if say i added a gain stage before the PI and after the tone stack?

Sorry rockster, i did have a look at doing this 6 months or so ago but sold the amp before i could experiment with the idea

Between the tonestack and the PI you'll obtain mainly a volume increase, between first and second stage you'll go from an AC30-like to a JCM800-like preamp: more gain and more volume (you'll need a master volume between tonestack and PI).
