Whats up with the "Text Enhanced" pop-ups?

Post by dreric »

I've found three pop up ads in old posts, this morning. A simple word or phrase is highlighted like a link an when the pointer passes over it a pop-up ad appears.

Something new or have we been hacked?

I am not getting that.

You may have some malware.

Sounds like you have been infected with adware, sounds like maybe purpleflags.net. Are the highlighted links purple or orange?

So my Norton didn't stop this!!

Microsoft Security Essentials is far better than Norton at maintaining my system clean. It is free as well.

Violated! I hate that, and +1 on the security essentials. Really nice piece of work from MS this time. A charm!

Norton got killed by a virus on my machine about six years ago. When I called for help, a nice Indian woman was kind enough to read the manual to me that came with the disk. It was so much more meaningful hearing it read that way than when I read it myself before calling.

IMHO Security Essentials is just about as good as any. I see malware get by all of them...

If you have strange behavior, or see text on a browser being turned into links on this site, I'd recommend you use the product below.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/malware_lp_form/

Malwarebytes is just about the best in catching malware. There's a free version that will detect and remove most malware/adware infections.

Another resource I would recommend is Virus Total.

http://www.virustotal.com - it is a different animal. Here, you can upload attachments you've received in an email, or scan websites you suspect of delivering malware or viruses. It scans submissions using just about EVERY antivirus product on the market today and gives you the results. It's quite fascinating....

On Windows boxes, most infection vectors are either Java, Adobe PDF, or Adobe Flash plugins for your browser. Keeping them updated is the best defense, along with Windows updates. PDF and Java exploits are the ones I suspect people ignore the most...

Anyway, Run MalwareBytes and see what turns up. You just might be surprised!

Sometimes you have to run windows in safe mode to be able to remove malware because some of it loads at start up.

To get into safe mode, press F8 repeatedly as the computer boots up.

Then choose Safe Mode.

Then run the Malwarebytes scan.
Be sure you have the latest definitions update.

Malwarebytes is good, but I've been liking SuperAntiSpyware even more lately. It was able to find and kill some nasty stuff that Malwarebytes couldn't.
