Fumes from hot teflon are quite poisonous.

Not sure how many whiffs gets you to LD50, but its not much.

Generic Ideal I linked to works well on the the 1000v 20AWG stranded Teflon I have. They sell the same exact strippers at Lowes for $20, but they only go up to 22AWG stranded or 20AWG solid, methinks. Either way, I've heard the mil-spec blades fit in the regular body.

I find myself a lot more relaxed when building amps now with the auto strippers I was using the Imperials before, which still come in handy for tight spots.

Inhalation of decomposition products of PTFE (over 290°C) may cause polymer fume fever, a temporary flu-like illness accompanied by fever, chills, and sometimes cough, of approximately 24 hours duration. Repeated episodes of polymer fume fever may cause lung damage. Inhalation of fluorine compounds as decomposition products of PTFE (over 290°C) may cause lung irritation and pulmonary edema.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): Oral LD50 1250 mg/kg in rats
The powder/compound is not a skin irritant. Effects in animals from single exposure by inhalation to high oncentragion of the dust include irritation of the lung. Repeated oral doses resulted in no observal toxic effects except for alteration in the number of circulating white blood cells after longterm dosing. Tests demonstrate no developmental toxicity in animals, and no genetic damage in animals or in bacterial cell cultures.

1250 mg/kg is 100gr on a 80kg... rat. I've not found any data on LD50 (or 90 or so on) for fumes.

I've mentioned this several times here over the years, but the Ideal Stripmaster no. 45-174 is designed for Teflon 16-26 ga. I've used it for quite a number of years now, and I'll never go back!
Somewhat expensive for hobby use, tho'...
