recommendation for automatic wire stripper for PTFE wire

Post by pula58 »

I was getting tired of melting the PVC insulation..so..decided to try my hand at some teflon wire.
Man, I cannot strip this stuff, it's too slippery!

I have been using a nice automatic wire stripper for years (one hand operation, it squeezez/grips the wire and pulls off the insulation). Is there a modestly priced tool that does the same thing with this slippery-as-an-eel teflon wire?

I thought I had found one (a Klein) but no one seems to stock it (Klein 11065: I think they stopped making it).

Suggestions ?
I don't want to use a heater type of stripper (fumes)

Thanks!

P.

I always use a simple cheap stripper like this one:

And I've never had problems with any cable.
Maybe I'm used to, but I'm faster with that one than with some similar to yours.

Somebody recommended this stripper and it works very well on Teflon wire.

Imperial IE-178

McMaster Carr has them for $12.01

My weapon of choice. http://steinair.com/storedetail.cfm?productid=287

I use with the Tefzel wire from Steinair, but it does work on Teflon too.

I use a smooth jaw needle nose pliers to hold the wire. Otherwise, I find it is too slippery.

I have a different brand of auto strippers. They won't grip the wires tight enough to hold when stripping.

Does your SteinAir stripper work on Teflon wire?

That's what I'd like to know too!
The autromatic wire stripper I have here slips when it tries to grip the teflon wire.

Hands down, best PTFE stripper ever. Dead clean cuts and you'd think you were stripping PVC or something. Everything else sucks. $12 and you'll never be screwing around with automatic or more complex strippers (that don't work on PTFE!) again.

The Teledyne Stripall thermal wire stripper is far and away the best stripper for teflon but they are quite expensive; approximately $350 USD new. I got one on FleaBay for $60. If you get one that doesn't have the temperature control it will only be good for teflon as it will be way too hot for PVC.

I have that Imperial model as well, but I hardly ever use it. My go to PTFE stripper is made by Klein, the shears are much sharper than the Imperial and IMHO from using both, it cuts better.

Fumes from hot teflon are quite poisonous.

Not sure how many whiffs gets you to LD50, but its not much.

A Stripmaster with the MIL spec blades will strip PTFE cleanly. For example my L-5217 uses the L-5560 blade set for 26 through 16 gauge.
