What happened to the D'Lite 22 !?!?

Post by dragonbat13 »

Hi, long time since I posted here.

I used to post as a newb asking wormy questions because I wanted to build a dumble toned amp. I had decided on a D'lite 22. Well things just didnt work out and the project was dropped. Well these days things have changed and I have the ability to build the amp now. I was going through all my junk and found the chassis, the only part I purchased. I saw it and said "Cool, I forgot about that, I cant let that nice chassis go to waste!"

So I come home and start looking for transformer numbers since that is the most expensive parts and I want to get them, then get the rest of the parts as funds allow. I spent all night searching this forum and the BN forum trying to find a BOM and other stuff. I didnt find jack! Its like nobody is even building them anymore.

I am looking for some transformers, a set of eyelet boards, and a BOM.

Can anybody give me an idea where to find this info, and also tell me what happened to all the D'lite builds?

I also plan on asking on the BN forum, but know that there is better info on here so I posted here first.

Thanks
Mark Clay

And more.

Not sure if these boards are fitted for BN chassis.

Thanks for the help, especially the voltage chart. That should kill about a thousand questions.

From what I understand, this amp is pretty much built off of bassman iron, correct?

What are the specs needed for a power transformer?

Here is what I would do!!

Get you standard replacement Bassman type power and a Marshall 50w off the shelf OPT..Check out CE or Magnetic Com.
Build it using 4 6V's w/1/2 power switch if you can..The price difference is not that great and you have the flexibility of going to 45 watt if need be..
Use the JJ 6V's as these are plenty stout to handle 450 with ease..If you like a fatter thicker with more crunch OD (rock tones) follow the 183 layout..
If you prefer a smoother tighter with more sustain and bloom follow the 102 layout..(adjust GNFB as needed)
You can wire the tonestack as per D-lite or do the standard rock/Jazz config, which I prefer..

Good Luck!!

Here is the Heyboer specs so any Fender type PT with 325-0-325 but BN spec'd theirs at 300mA which I am not sure what Fender PT's are rated at.

The OT if going for 22w 6v6 you can you the Deluxe OT.

Here's a link to a vibrolux replacement that will bolt/fit in your chassis
http://store.triodestore.com/trvirepotr.html

Read/research and then
I would follow Tony's suggestions. You will have a great amp, and quite possibly a new addiction...
Is your chassis drilled for 4 power tubes or 2 ?

I thank everybody VERY much, I found out more in an hour on here than four hours of fooling around last night. I knew this was the best place to look.

While the 46v6 sounds good, The chassis I have is only drilled for two. Plus I dont want to stray too far off the path until I have the amp completed. Then I will do some mods.

My current amp collection is as follows,
74 Non Pull Twin Reverb (Clean stuff)
Peavy Classic 30 (rock stuff and blues crunch, Its an OK amp, good enough for me)
mid 50s princeton that needs a good resto, its dead in the water, but it should be a minor fix. (Do I need to explain that tone? :D )
Peavy 5150 half stack (Heavy Metal Vomit Party Amp! I really love it, especially the 4x12 cab. I plan on using this amp on that cabinet alot)

All of these amps are used about the same amount except the broken tweed. Each has its own place, like the peavy 30 is the goto road dog amp. So I am really going for a tone that will seperate itself from these other amps. I know I wont get the tone of an original ODS, but I am really going for as much of the dumble overdrive side experience as I can. So is the 183 layout the way to go? I am not very interested in the super clean tones at all.

Also I really want to have an effects loop, but not a passive. I plan on installing a stand alone tube driven loop from London Power for that. Just wanted to mention it even though that will also be way down the road from the original build.

OK wait, I miss read,

Tony, you noted that the 102 layout is tighter with more sustain and "bloom". Not so sure what bloom is, but is this in refrence to overdrive tones?

I am going to find some sound clips and demos of the suggested setups.

Also I would go with the marshall OT if it can just be permantly wired for the lower power, until I drill some more power tube holes if need be. If I do go with the higher power OT, I should loose some of the transformer saturation when only using two 6v6s, correct? I wouldnt think this would be a bad thing if the majority of the ODS drive comes from the preamp. I wouldnt think this is how the dumble amps get their overdrive tones. Overworked output transformers are tweed and Plexi tones, which to me sound nothing like dumbles.

I done a few builds on this chassis, but I ordered my own iron from Heyboer and punched my own boards. AFAIK, the D'Lite assembly guilde is still on the BN website.

1. Transformers: PT- unit for the BN chassis has a Vibrolux foot print(Fender 022723, 2.5" x 3.125"). The PT provided by BN were a much heavier than stock unit. However, for a 6V6 build you could use a stock unit.

OT- originals were based on Vibrolux foot print styled iron as well. You can use any dual 6v6 type iron.

2. Boards: there are two different board mounting centers of BN boards, the earlier ODS marked chassis has a different hole spacing than the DIY marked chassis.

Let me know which chassis you have and I can give you the board mounting centers.

3. What happened: very, very poor customer service and a influx of info/parts on the full blown D versions. Thus, most folks not opt to build a watered down version.

Good information guys I saved TM's data for future posts.

Nice chassis I wish I had a stack of those.

The Dumble ODS topology is designed to generate it's overdrive character mainly from it's cascaded gain stages in the preamp side.. The output section is designed to run fairly clean.. The reason for the colder bias and larger iron and greater filtering..Soo IMO in going with the larger 50w iron you are actually heading more in the direction Dumble designed the amp's performance specs, so it will feel and sound more like a Dumble amp should IMO.. If you've played a D-lite with the smaller transformers and like it then by all means Vibrolux away..If you've played an actual 100w Dumble ODS style and like it but want a lower powered 6v version go with the transformers I recommend don't worry about saturation and regulation and feel the punch.. Looks to me like you can drill 2 more octals on there.. :D

Ok I got to looking at all the PT and decided that I would just go with the Tremolux PT. Reason, I already have enough 30+ watt amps, The larger transformers would require new holes for mounting, and the extra tubes would require holes also. I really dont want to have to modify this chassis any more than I have to. If I want a more advanced build I will make my own chassis.

EDIT: WELL SHOOT!! as soon as I posted this I see from above that what I really want to do is go with the heavier iron.

Looking at the chassis there is a center punched hole for a rectifier tube. I could use that, and move the bias pot to get four tubes in. That wouldnt be bad. As far as the PT, it may take some grinding and drilling, but not much.

If I had enough board material, I would just make you a set modded for the PI trimmer. Nevertheless, here's the dimensions taken from an actual BN supplied D'lite board set which matches that ODS marked D'lite chassis that I have. As always verify and double check these mounting centers.

Main board: 2.675" x 8.5" - 2.125" x 7.935" centers

Pwr board: 3.875" x 3.75" - 3.125" x 3.350" x 2.725" centers

Bias board: 2.875" x 1.75" - 2.350" centers

Ken Watts (turretboards.com) can cut you blank board material.
