Transformers spacing/ orientation and heater CT

Post by azatplayer »

Im in the middle of a naylor superdrive build.
Im curious about the transformer layout in these amps. They run their trannies in the same direction, no 90 degree axis change. Im wondering how convention has escaped them yet appears they made a pretty good amp, tho a little off the radar.
What they do differently is the trannies are mounted short way up. rather than the long side heading upwards, they have it long side laying down, also ythey have the heaters raised to a DC reference.
Just wondering if the dc reference eliminates any of the cause and effect of trannies too close or in line etc.
I suspect not but dont know for a fact.

I have built amps with the transformers oriented along the same plane, however, they were completely across the chassis from one another, as far apart as the chassis would allow. A number of manufacturers do this such as Cameron, Hughes & Kettner, THD, etc.

I have had no noise or hum issues doing this, but minimum separation distance should probably be observed. I have not tested what that distance is however such as with the Headphone Trick or other methods. I also keep the transformers away from sensitive areas with layout planning.

I also orient the transformers with the long side parallel to the chassis and in an upright fashion as shown in the photo. I always elevate heaters to DC because it is so easy to do so and results in quiet amps and especially with any amp with a cathode follower.

Definitely use the headphone trick to listen to your OT before bolting it down. Works a charm.

On a recent build I used both headphones and a scope to position the OT and PT. Strangely, I got the most noise at 90 degrees, and the least at around 15-20 degrees. The transformers were placed next to each other. I was very surprised, but I'm glad I took the time to check this.
