Apple can suck it
Seriously. Pad crash and restore gave me back everything but all my settings and data.
What is backup for if it doesn't save your data? 5 months of stuff in the toilet.
Thanks, Apple! Suck me.

Yep.
The new iTunes has discontinued users ability to back-up their iTunes purchases. Apple has pushed all that to the iCloud (which they control, and lock in customers to proprietary Apple hardware and software).
And the latest OSX incarnation is terrible; buggy as hell.
Not happy. I purchased my first Mac in 1985. It's sad to see their arrogance and fixation with clever, but flawed, gadgets ruin what was a good computer manufacturing company.

Re: Apple can suck it
Lucky that all my app and purchases were backed up.
All my notes were lost (amp specs). All my photos were lost (amp guts) all my save data from all apps.. lost.
Why would it not backup data? Last backup 3 days ago, and still..
The reason for restoring NOT FIXED. Search for a podcast, crash itunes store. I like science. I will use it to create a monster that destroys Cupertino.

Sorry to hear about your loss . The first thing I learned in computer school was to save a copy of all important files. I keep a separate hard drive and physically copy all the files I do not want to lose. I also run backups ( which are computer controlled). I do not really trust automated backup programs. And now you will not either.
Re: Apple can suck it
Are we talking about an iPad?
If you were syncing your photos, they would be recoverable.
As for application data, I think that data probably exists in your iPad backup. Did you restore the backup after restoring the iPad to the latest firmware?
And purchases don't need to be backed up. Apple will let you re-download anything you have previously purchased (even free stuff you have installed is considered purchased).

I'm on a PC and I had a hard drive crash a few months ago.
I did back up my Itunes library on another disk in the PC but for some reason it didn't import all of them.
So I did the download from the Cloud thingy and I think I got it all back.
Just about every time I play Itunes it says there is a new version.
I don't know what the deal is but sometimes they fix what doesn't need fixing.

I am still a PC guy. Don't own a Mac, and probably never will since Apple charges so much for them. I'd buy one if I could get it for money that is comparable to a PC, but not at 2-3 times as much.
But I own and love my iPad and iPhone. While it is a little frustrating that I don't always know what it is doing and where it is putting "my stuff", I find it generally pretty fool proof, even with Jailbreaking.
All computers suck. Well, they don't really suck. it just sucks when we depend on them for things and then something goes wrong and we lose what we were depending on them for. The moral of the story is to NOT depend on them. Backup your data. Backup your backups. And backup your backups of your backups. And even more importantly, TEST to make sure you can restore from your backups.

Backing up to a separate disk offers another level of protection, but not full protection. I've had my backup drive fail several times in the last 3 years. A RAID array offers a higher level of protection. That's what I am using. I can't wait for the day when hard drive technology is replaced by an affordable alternative.
Itunes is a piece of shit, especially on a PC. No thanks, been there - done that.

Jeez, sorry to hear about all of this stuff. Been a Mac user since 1985, too. In my computer programming classes, I was taught to have MULTIPLE hard disk backups.
My Mac Pro Tower (2006 model) has four 1 TB drives. Two are for backup. I have emails going back to 1998. I've got more pics than I could scan in a weekend.
But they're in three places, too. Four if you count the external drive I sometimes copy files off to.
The only gripe I have is f**king Microsoft updating Mac Office and rendering some email backups as "unreadable". That will piss you off mightily.

Seriously? I've been using Windows and MacOS since the late 80s. Mac OS X 10.7 is the most stable desktop OS I've ever experienced in my life. Just look at my uptime:NickC wrote:And the latest OSX incarnation is terrible; buggy as hell.

Ever gone 51 days in Windows without the need to reboot?

I have long been an advocate for OSX. I've said hundreds of times that OSX is the BEST OS on the planet.xtian wrote:Seriously? I've been using Windows and MacOS since the late 80s. BUT ...... when I recently "upgraded" from Snow Leopard (using the OSX on USB path) I've had a heck-of-a-lot of buggy behavior with both the Finder level and Safari. Weird screen distortions, high-pitched whining noise whenever using the audio-interface, and other odd stuff.
A buddy in a high-tech support role loosely affiliated with Apple told me it was a mistake to upgrade. He stuck with Snow Leopard. Now I'm waiting for Mountain Lion with hopes they'll have fixed all the stuff they broke.

Re: Apple can suck it
I'm not a Mac guy, but OS X is built on a Unix platform, which is an inherently stable platform. IMO, the stability comes from Unix, not OS X itself.
I am a heavy Linux and Windows user at work and home. There are often times when Linux and/or Windows must be rebooted. At the same time, I have gone many many months without having to reboot Windows 7 and Windows XP. YMMV.
As I said, I am not a Mac guy so not much experience. I do know that Itunes is shit.

Re: Apple can suck it
I've been an Apple user since the 80's back when a Motorola 6502 8-bit processor and 64k of memory was cutting edge. I have continued to be an Apple user all these years because they are well made and typically outlast a PC in terms of overall hardware quality and backward compatibility of the OS (as refinements are made) but also, more recently, they are less prone to virus attacks and all of the clutter, spybot, and malware that goes along with Windows. Sure there are problems with any computer or operating system but I have professionally had to rebuild more PCs that I care to recall. The elegance of the user interface of the Apple OS is what I particularly like. There is ONE simple way to do things, not countless back doors into the Control Panels for instance and the highly convoluted way Windows lets the user control the machine settings.
I have listened to the bitter laments of many friends over the years who insist on buying PCs only to have them slow to a crawl when they get spywared or virused to death. I have never had to deal with any of these issues as an Apple user. I used to program BASIC, Pascal, and Assembly back in the day, but now am just a user. Now, I demand 99% uptime and reliability and I get that with Apple products. One friend went through three laptops over the course of my one iMac. He finally had enough, bought an iMac and has been very happy since.
I suffered a harddrive failure in a 5 year old iMac last year, but that is the first product failure in almost 30 years of Apple use.
The point is, yes, computers are imperfect but it is the JOB of the manufacturer to make the user interface robust and unbreakable since the average user will invariably find a weakness. I do not have time in my life for computer problems nor interest to invest in the knowledge to become my own IT guy (I do have sufficient knowledge however). But I know my mom (which represents the average user for sure LOL) for instance can barely print a document let alone troubleshoot her wireless connection if it goes down (always a provider problem, not a Mac problem). I remote in to her iMac, fix her stuff, and she is good to go.

Reeltarded, sorry that you lost some data. Install a better backup system.
Guys, there are plenty of problems with Mac and PC based hardware and software. I have had plenty of problems with Windows/PCs and have seen many with OSX/Mac. To pretend that one is substantially better than the other is nonsense, IMO. For every problem on one platform, I can find the equivalent or similar problem on the other. The PC is more of an open platform while the Mac is not. This is a double-edged sword. It generally leads to better stability in the Mac, but also less flexibility. Choose your poison, but please don't paint the debate in black and white terms based on what you happen to like. The grey area is vast...

Re: Apple can suck it
My first Mac was a 512. I once paid $16k for a ram upgrade. Remember IIfx?
If you haven't experienced trouble on a Mac at least on a level with Wintel, I dare say you aren't a power user. Both have faults, at least I can work around the faults on Windows.
Don't cuss me. I work on a spanking new 12 core everyday, another thorn. Apple has my money already. My home net-box is Win XP. I last installed it in late '06, and no problems there. The machine that is running is 11 years old.
11 years old. Imagine trying to run your 11 year old Mac.
Mac stability is folklore, and this problem I have isn't atypical, as seen on google search for failed backups/restore on many IOS devices.
Justnduring this message, notice the <---(n) where the space ismsupposed to be? Look at the m between is and supposed. I am sick of backspacing because you can't type at speed without hitting letters instead of the spacebar because the device has a marginally finished interface. The letters aremtoo .. there we go again.. too close together, and the interface was made to use at an angle notmdirectly facing you, but up and forward.
I have more complaints. What can I do? Absolutely nothing but deal with mediocre crap at a huge premium, that's what.
I would love a better backup system. Unfortunately, Itunes is the one offered for Ipads. Stuck and effed.
