Hello,
I built a VVR (London Power Scale like) into my Liverpool and now I have to dimm the drive of the pre amp to keep headroom.
But thats not so important.
The main question is written above: which kind is the best?
A normal prePI MV, or like LPS offers as alternativ: direct int the PI (the two 1M grid resistors out and the 1M double Pot in, like Pablo has it in his K60, or a K.F. MV Nr. 2 (sim. LarMar, the 2x 220k out and a 250k double pot in).
I have the PI MV for the moment in, but it makes to much scary noise on both ends of scale. So probably I will change it to a Nr. 2, or ordinary PrePI MV?
I´m little confused and dont want to dig to much in the amps hart.
What you use, and why?
Best from Vienna

I went from using no master volume for 30 years, to using 2 or 3 on my favorite amps.
PPIMV plus a simple master off the tone stack is a great way to go, because you can lower the simple master a tiny amount when the PPIMV is set very low, and you don't get the overdriven PI, so it reacts more like it's wide open.
Did that make any sense? High attenuation with a PPIMV is a little splatty sounding to me.

Hi,
yes it makes sens. I saw this often in Marshalls.
I didnt install a PPIMV in my Liverpool too and was happy, but now I want do dimm it by VVR and there you need a drive compensation.
And because the Wrecks start to clipp backwards I´m not shure what kind of MV I should use. That what I have in, is not a good solution (the double 1M pot instead of the 2 1M gridleak in the PI and 2x 10k to the grids.
I´ll try it with the K.F Nr. 3 from the Wreckpages. I guess its the Matchless Spitfire MV.
Best

Re: Which MV for a Liverpool?
The best "master volume" with a Liverpool or Express is a nice attenuator, truly! My fave being the Faustine Phantom, but on a budget the THD Hotplate is workable. Personally I didn't like the Airbrake (had one for 5 years or so) except for maybe a 2-4 db off, and even at that it was most shrill of all I've tried. The Ultimate attenuator seemed to upset the amp's breakup with a higher than typical load, the net being the amp didn't clean up as well as it should though it's linear operation tonally is nice. If only the amp would clean up as well with it. With a wreck a key trait that contributes to a great clean to mean function is the power supply sag. The result being a very even volume between the two. Once you go master volume you reduce or almost eliminate the sag by not pushing the output stage, and the result is a more dynamic clean to mean. This results in too much volume difference between the clean to dirty to work nicely in a band situation. GK

It would seem that Faustine is out of business.

Re: Which MV for a Liverpool?
This is exactly what I am finding with my most recent Express build.geetarpicker wrote:...Once you go master volume you reduce or almost eliminate the sag by not pushing the output stage, and the result is a more dynamic clean to mean. I've also found that the airbrake seems to borrow some tone especially once it's really starting to accomplish the desired results in reducing the volume. I am experimenting with an isolation cabinet now and so far it's working very well. The down side is that it requires a 2nd amp to monitor the Expres and of course what I hear is entirely dependent on the monitor system i'm using.
Ultimately I think nothing beats a situation where you can play loud. YMMV.

Iso boxes have plate mode problems like acoustic guitars though... ehh?
I like laying a 4x12 on it's face and just cranking the snot out of a 100. Tingles if you sit in a wooden chair really close.
The ladies love it. That was inappropriate, and I am kind of sorry, but I digress...
