Increasing pot value

A simple and, perhaps, stupid question about increasing pot values.

Take a typical volume pot. Sometimes I increase the value of that pot by adding a resistor from lug 1 to ground (in place of the wire).

Question is, can't I also increase the effective value o the pot by placing a resistor in series just ahead of the pot?

(I realize this will alter the range of the potentiometer adjustment)
